Dyno Results 440 Mopar
« on: March 15, 2016 - 10:33:17 AM »
HI Guys,

Wanted to get some baseline numbers so I know how different MODs are effecting the car. These are HP/TQ numbers to the rear wheels. Seems a bit low for a 440. Could even be an RV engine, I have no idea. but now that I have a baseline I'd like to start planning a build for late summer/early fall. Has aftermarket Headers, Intake, Holly 750 double pumper, MSD Ignition with Digital programmable box. Other than that I have no idea whats in the block, but guessing by the numbers there's not much. Initial pass as I brought it in, was 251 hp and 308 tq. The tuner changed some jets, and an accelerator pump in the carb and found another 20HP. However the car isn't real drive-able now. I feel like it was tuned for WOT and not cruising around town. Stalled a few times, likely flooding itself. Plan on calling them to see if they will undo what they did haha. Anyways, point being, it feels snappy for 250 HP and 308 tq. I can't imagine what it would feel like with 500+ to the wheels, would love to be there someday.

I"m in the planning process now. I know the top of the block can be swapped out without pulling the engine. Heads and Cam could be short term options. Once fall hits my buddies garage should be built and we can pull the block. However what are you thoughts on just getting a crate stroker moter as opposed to rebuilding mine. 10-12K seems like the price point for that. Also I read that some have made big cubic inches and get pretty decent fuel milage. Sucks only having 250HP and 8MPG haha. Thanks for looking. I'll, keep these numbers to myself around town, and just let people think I have the fastest car in town  :bigshades:

Can you take a pic of the raise portion of the 440 block opposite the distributor?

This will help us tell what you have to start with.

Ha - I'd like to be able to drive it around the street too! Never driven a car with a 4000 stall converter but I'd imagine it's not too street able.

I will snap a picture shortly. Brought my car into work this afternoon. Stalled quite a bit and seems to be running hot. Feels like it did when I first bought it and the float levels were too high. Hoping it's an easy fix. I know the tuner put in larger jets, and changed to a bigger accelerator pump. The accelerator pump seems to have fixed the hesitation from idle to a quick bump of the throttle. but the jets may be flooding it? Waiting for him to call me back to let me know what he changed

Just read a article in hot rod magazine. Same power output from a 440 challenger. 252 HP to the wheels. They bolted up heads, intake, cam, rockers, and a 850 demon carb, and produced close to 400 to the wheels. I already have intake, headers and my holley 750 double pumper should be adequate. So heads, cam and rockers. maybe 2Kish to get get another 120HP out of it. Perhaps I can look into that sooner rather than later.

I snapped a pic, but realized its the wrong side of the block! I'll get another tomorrow. Also adjusted my float levels in my carb and it's running smooth again.

Yes it is - thinking of painting them Red to match the stripes.

Love the old school stangs! I hope I can afford 500 HP before gas goes up too high!

Yeah - I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of their car. I said I'd be happy if I get 250HP out of it. Everyone said it would be over 300. Came in at 251 on it's first pass haha. Also I've had more carb woes yesterday. Just can't seem to get it right since I brought it to the dyno shop. Finally limped it to my buddies garage. Upon looking at it with a timing light it was Retarded quite a bit. Noticed that it was starting tough, had to pump it even when warm to start. Now that I put the timing back to where I had it, it seems to be running pretty good last night and this morning. Have tested all scenario's the best I could without being a public hazard.

I do have a question. If you guys were in my shoes. I brought in a good running car, hoping an expert could dyno it, get the results and dial it in. Which they did and found 20 more HP, however the car was not drive-able - stalled on highway and at steady 45-50MPH on side roads. Upon calling them and told them my car was not running well, and I wanted to ask a few questions I was told the guy was busy. Had to call back the next day to where I was told he was still busy. expressed my concerns, they took my number and about an hour later he called me back. Now at this point, I thought the car was running decent after making some float adjustments, so I didn't give him too much s**t. However after work it was back to running terrible. No changes would fix it. Then after an evening of stalling out, we then adjusted timing, and it ran much better, no weak spots.

The tuner charges 125 an hour ($493 spent for about 3 and a half hours there) - very reputable shop for newer cars. Have lots of great reviews for corvettes, Camaro's etc. (Not many options for dyno shops in raleigh, maybe 2 I could find). He did multiple dyno pulls. Installed a Holley Accelerator pump (?) on the carb ($90) plus labor, and I believe installed some larger jets, and obviously adjusted my timing via distributor cap. Since I"ve never been to a shop before, I don't know what to expect, or what the proper course of action is. When we spoke, I mainly let him know that I was disappointed in customer service and I was hoping for better results. Didn't have much to say other than to apologize for my car not running right, and that all the numbers were in line on the dyno. I guess my expectation was to offer to make it right. What would you guys do in this scenario. (I also don't want to alienate possible 1 of the 2 dyno's in the area as I will want to see how upgrades effect the engine). My gut tells me to chalk it up to experience and move on.
