« on: March 20, 2016 - 09:45:48 AM »
Looking at coming to Carlisle in July but would like to spend a couple of extra days in the area.
What have you folks done/enjoyed while staying in the area?

You name it I have done it. Every year we book off an extra 2 days and go see something nearby.

Super nearby:

Hershey amusement park - Meh I'm not an amusement park kinda guy but many of the people I have gone with loved it.
Gettysburg - As a Canadian this has very little relevance to me BUT the way it is preserved and the little tour was awesome. It's a cool feeling standing a few steps away from where Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address.
Centralia - Kinda cool but truthfully not a lot to see.

Baltimore: 1.5 hours away from Harrisburg
The ships in the harbour including the sub are just awesome - worth the tour.
Went to an Orioles game - Good time
Eat the crab, I'd go back just for that.
If I had time I would have done a harbour tour but that area near the water is really nice.

DC: 2 hours -ish from Harrisburg
TONS to see but the best by far is the air and space museum at the Smithsonian, if you see one museum in your lifetime I tell you this is it. Most museums are stuffy and crappy but this one has not just the rarest but the coolest artifacts in it from the sprit of St. Louis to the lunar landing module. It's also completely free! I did also enjoy the museum of American History.
I did a bus tour in DC that brought us to all the monuments, Arlington, Ford Theater, Capitol building, Pentagon etc... it was a fairly expensive tour but worth it.
Go see the Declaration of independence.

Philadelphia: Not sure of distance but this is this years Carlisle side trip.
going to see the liberty bell (or one of them anyways)
Some car museum I forget the name right now
Philly Cheese steak...

Agree with Hershey park  they have some really good coasters there. Baltimore downtown inner harbor are nice touristy areas with Fort McHenry, the science center and aquarium to name a few. There's also Annapolis with its history and the Naval Academy that you can tour. Crabs are good eating I could even pick up a bushel and steam them up. From Harrisburg to Balt, DC there's plenty to do and see. It just depends on your interests.

I grew up in Harrisburg.  But I probably couldn't tell you what to do.

Actually, for the first time ever, last year, we took a tour of the capitol building - it was a Sunday morning on a whim.  I was really impressed.  Its free, and quite beautiful.  My 10 year old daughter is begging to go back.

There's also a Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, about a mile west of the capitol building.  I've never been there, but would like to go some day.

I got a tour of 3-Mile Island once.  I don't know if they do those any more.  At least you could drive by and say you've seen it.

And the women folk always enjoy Lancaster County and the Amish.  If you have any money left over, you can buy her a quilt.

There's a museum in Harrisburg (http://statemuseumpa.org/).  Planning to go back there someday.

Riverfront Park is a nice walk if you are in to those things (http://parkharrisburg.com/destinations/riverfront-park/)

The Red Rabbit Drive-In in Duncannon is a good place for a burger, and the waitresses come to your car like the olden days (http://www.redrabbitdrivein.com/Red_Rabbit_Drive_In/Welcome.html)

I've also wanted to visit the Carlisle War College Heritage Walk (http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/trail/aht.cfm)

Harrisburg City Island has 2 venues

   1) The river boat : http://harrisburgriverboat.com/

   2)  Minor League Baseball Team Harrisburg Senators: http://www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t547

There may be other things to do as well.
