bulkhead harness connector assembly ????
« on: March 21, 2016 - 08:15:01 AM »
So I got me a new harness plug/connector whatever you want to call it. I'm doing an EFI conversion and I pretty much eliminated one whole harness but I'd like to utilize those fuses for something else so I bought one of these to tap into it. Problem is, I go to assemble and crimp some wires on it and i can't get the blade terminals into the plug. Is there a trick to this i'm missing?

Where did you buy the plug? I didn't know they were available without buying the whole harness.

When you remove them you have to kind of press the two separated pieces of the connector together with needle nose pliers.  I had to pull them back apart some to get it to hold when re-installing.

It should be pretty tight. If you can't get them in, try compressing it slightly. Also make sure it's orientated properly, I'm pretty sure they do go in a certain direction

I have replaced a couple of mine over the years because they got damaged. Oem pieces to Oem pieces I got from salvage yards. The split in the blade is the flex joint for it to clip in. They are just a slip fit piece. Also believe they do index in only one direction. As in the plastics retaining ledge for the blade hook is only on one side. If they still do not go in I would suspect the molded part. Plastic injection tooling is my trade and there are a million reasons he holes may be too small.
A couple of 2nd op suggestions are:
1 remove one of the factory blades and see if it goes into new plastic piece. If yes, it is the blade.
2 if still no, the molded piece is small. Make or grind up a piece of hard steel that mimics the blade size and use it as a tool to broach the opening to the size you need.
3 a possibility but not sure if it would be viable. Heat up your new blades and press them into plastic hot so they could somewhat melt their way in. Would really be a crap shoot on being too hot and damaging v/s not hot enough and sticking midway.
Alternatively the broach tool could be heated up and inserted the same way. This could be a better option because you could push it in to open hole and then remove it to eliminate the resident heat issue.

Also just thought of this. Take one of your new blades and slightly file or sand off the corners of it. Could possibly be just those digging in as opposed to the 2 flat faces.

Good luck.

Green fish, have you already done the ammeter bypass? If not I would be real cautious of making that bulkhead connection anything but perfect. Lots of bad things can happen there even if it's done correctly. :yikes......2cents

Agreed, drill some holes and pass the wire straight thru

Sometimes the crimping deforms/bends the connector enough so it doesn't fit right in the plastic. There are a couple 'wings' on the blade connector that must fit in the 'slots' of the plastic.

That particular connector doesn't have the high amperage wires on it.

Hey Owen
Greenfish.
I purchased copper male and female connectors at Carlisle.
Can't recall the vendor but they sell wiring harness also,,,,,,,,
I'd need to go thru all of my business cards to find them.......
