Overwhelmed Newbie
« on: June 13, 2005 - 06:29:20 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, as well as the restoration game,  my partner and I recently bought our first project car, a 72 challenger, it needs a complete restoring, we are so overwhelmed, we don't know where to begin, we figure our first goal would be to get it running.  The last owner dropped a 383 in it, literally, it's not even mounted to the frame.  It's going to be alot of work, but we are excited, we have been waiting for this for many years, when we bought our house, we seeked out a two car garage specifically for this purpose.  If anyone has any helpful advice, good websites, good places to buy (aside from Summit and Year One), we'd much appreciate it.  I have been looking all over the net and found many resources, I'm just not sure which ones are trust worthy.  I have been combing through this forum and have found alot of great info, I was able to figure out our car's vin and fender tag info (I was just happy they matched).  Thanks in advance for any kind of help you can offer.  I have a few pics, but be forwarned, it's not pretty.  I don't have any pics of the interior, but the dash is cracked pretty bad and we need to either replace/recover the seats.

Welcome newbie,

The restoration game as you call it is as different as we all are, so my advice is to start to eliminate all rust process from the car and then take it step by stepto completion, since this is your first project I would docement all bolts and screws taken from the car and even picture every detail thoroughly before removing them from the car. Start it running and driving, will probably take your mind off the restoration process in one stage or another, so working from the ground up will get you there eventually and when done you can be proud of your hard and correctly done job.

Good luck

Welcome to the site.  It looks like you have a nice car to startwith.  IMO Legendary Auto Interiors is the best place for interior parts.

Welcome friend (s), you will absolutely find any answer to any question you may have about any stage of restoration on an e-bod at this site. I'd only suggest like someone else has mentioned, formulate what you what the car to be, then determine a progressive plan to reach that finished goal, there will be a logical sequence to this so as to avoid "re work" and or added expenses. There are members here who can mentally see where you are at and can tell you your best next step. Unfortunately, I would not fall into that elete group, but beleive me others here do! There are web sites of our members who have documented via instruction and pics of their own resto, I'd study some of these to perhaps determine what you may decide to do with your 72, and that loks like a real nice start for a beautiful ride, congratulations.

Welcome to the board!  Glad to have another member in our community.

Group, here's another newbie that's in search of vendors and resto information.  We should pool our knowledge instead of making every new member ask the same questions over and over.  We know where the stuff is.  Why hold the info so tight to our vest?   :dontknow:

It's obvious the big guys (YearOne, Paddock, etc) have good stuff, but many times there are other smaller sources for the same exact item at much lower prices.  It would take a new person (like myself who is still learning) many hours to find these smaller vendors and even then they probably wouldn't trust them.

Specific questions will always need personal attention, but is a list of vendors, what they provide and personal experience with them too much to ask???
