Eastwood rust products
« on: March 27, 2016 - 06:34:40 PM »
Question for anyone who's tried the stop rust products from Eastwood. Looking to do the undercarriage and trying to figure out if just the rust encapsulater would do the job or should the converter be used first and then the encapsulater. Of course going to wire brush first to get anything loose off. Also with the encapsulater I'm thinking of using the spray can as opposed to brushing. Has anyone tried that? If so how did it turn out, how many cans were used, and how many coats did you do?

I've heard Eastwood stuff is good....

I didn't use any Eastwood products I found them overpriced, I.m.o

I used purple power degreaser and power washed it 3 times.

Then , I  wire brushed the whole bottom with a cup brush on a small right angle grinder

Then I coated the whole bottom of the car with rust mort 3 times then power washed it ,dried it an coated it (and myself )with por-15 gloss black 3 coats

My car is a driver , so my methods may not be kosher to others, I take no responsibility for my opinion . Lol

Products I used :

Think using a cordless drill with a wire cup will have enough power to do what I need?

Yeah  but it might take you a lot longer ..

The higher Rpms of the small grinders  help you cover a big area faster and  are less fatiguing.   Especially if your upside down  like I was for freeking ever!!!!!

Ohh yeah heavy leather work gloves and goggles are a must  if you want to keep both eyeballs and 10 fingers ..

I  use gothic length welding gloves..

Agreed! Those little wires will put an eye out immediately. My next question is, did you use water wings for when you were under it pressure washing?!

I used a pretty coarse wirewheel on a 20 000 rpm grinder, if you hit an edge, wires will come off and they are like missiles, went right thru my tshirt, had a bunch of them in my belly, I looked like an hedgehog. Cleans up the metal very good though.

I sandblasted and coated the bottom with POR15. The instructions said POR15 works best on sandblasted metal.  :2cents:

I'd like to sandblast it but it's still being driven. Basically hoping to get some surface rust off of it and protect the underside.

So jealous.
As for Eastwood, I've used there rust stuff. POR15 is hands down the best. But im please with there rust encapsulator, and undercoat. I used the undercoat on the bottom of my trunk. It would be good for spot jobs or the whole underside.  It sprays nice, but one can doesn't get you far. Just knock off any scale rust and spray. Its durable! 3M has a spray just as good. I really like Eastwoods iner frame paint. The 18" hose is nice at getting inside the frame. Id use the undercoat for what your doing. I also put it on my trunk floor and its held up to me useing it as a table as I work on the car.

I just ordered the KBS kit and plan to try it this weekend. Watched the video on their website and it looked simple enough. I'll post results afterward.

Use of gloves is highly recommended or you will have black hands for a couple of days. :22yikes:
