    wheel bearing torque?

    does anyone know the front wheel bearing torque for a 73 challenger?

    according to my manual it says just tight enuff for zero end play but I have always put just a tad of preload on them approx 15 inch pounds

    my dad's 73 truck requires a certain ft/lb to seat the bearings then you back off

    Treefrog,
       I never used a torque wrench. Just hand tighten it, then maybe a half turn with a wrench, but not reeeaaall tight. If you go too far, then the bearings get squashed. Besides, you have to put in the Cotter pin, so if you don't have it tight enough, you won't be able to find the hole. This shouldn't be a big deal.  :grinno:

    I've always adjusted tapered wheel bearings by snugging them up until the rotor/drum has a small amount of drag from preload, then loosen and fingertighten.  Try to insert cotter pin.  Loosen until cotter pin lines up if necessary.

    I agree , you need a couple of thou for expansion with heat , any tigher & the bearing will over heat
