Using a push button to start?? how to wire?

So with my EFI I have a lot of new electronics. Things that need to be on when the car cranks and runs. Due to the mopar electronics this is difficult to do. I'm thinking that ill run my electronics so they are powered in the "Run" position and then use a push button to engage the starter.

So... key on, push button, start.

what dont want is for the button to work when the key not in the run pos. Its a manual transmission so I dont want to risk it being in gear and lurching fwd or something like that if i accidentally hit the button.  One way i suppose would be a N safety switch. ( I should probably do that anyhow) but is there a way to use a relay that would prevent the starter from engaging unless the key is in run?

                    Wire a relay that provides a ground to your starter relay with key on only.  Terminal 30 to the ground terminal on the starter relay. Terminal 87 to ground. Terminal 85 to ground. Terminal 86 to switch on power.

                            Just providing a ground, 30 amps more than enough.

Are you just after doing something different or is there a benefit I am overlooking? You already have to get the key out, put the key in and turn it on..why add a step to hit another button?

I'm on my second car with a start button and they're cool. I can see why he wants to do it.

Yea I got hooked on a push button start when I bought my 10 Challenger RT. I am putting one into my Cuda as well.

I'm with Goody. Not sure why you want the extra step. Unless that button is in an out of the way place to discourage theft?
Or are you going the whole 'bluetooth' setup where you have a fob instead of keys? That would be cool in an old car.

I don't get it either. I have a push button Ram truck and I also love it. BUT, I have a fob in my pocket to activate it. If I had to put the key into the switch and turn it to the first click..... wtf is the advantage ?

             First time I drove a fob / push button car I jumped in and pushed the button. Starter engaged, motor started, cool right. Got to the beer store, then I wondered, how the he!! do I turn it off.      Thought if I hit the button again it would engage the starter while the engine is running. Well didn't bring my phone, drove back home to ask my sister. Well needless to say she       said push the button again. It will shut it off.  But the darn button just said START .    Technoligy marches on.

my thoughts are because finding hot when cranking and run can be difficult and there may be a lag between when you let go of crank. With a button I was thinking I can just put it on run and crank the starter with a separate button and not have to worry about it.

There are several ways to do this depending on what your objective is;

1. If you just want a push to start type deal, that is easy but you will need another switch for the power (think race car, throw a power switch and then push the button, to turn off, flip the power switch off).

2. a modern "push to start/push to stop" switch; this is a bit more complicated and requires some type of controller that interfaces with the push button so it knows what you want to do. There are a number of systems on the market  which do exactly this, however I agree that if you currently have a keyed ignition it doesn't make a lot of sense to use PB system as you will have to put the key in, turn it on (powering the system), push the button, etc.

In my case, I was looking hard at some of the modern systems, but the good ones are not cheap and at the end of the day I decided that I liked the race car style as I do not have a keyed ignition system any longer. So I have a master power switch, an accessories switch and a push to start switch (I made a panel where the radio used to go).

It isn't overly difficult but requires some planning and thought; just have to figure out what you want and how it will work. The tuner guys use the push button start all the time.

The two wires are in your engine compartment already. The brown one is hot when cranking, the blue is hot in run. The way the switch is constructed, the blue wire gets power before the brown loses power. Tying those two wires together is how most MSD boxes are wired.
