Plum Crazy Paint Question
« on: April 09, 2016 - 08:10:56 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to paint the Challenger and I've decided on Plum Crazy Purple.  I was just at Barrett Jackson in Palm Beach and Dodge had a Plum Crazy Challenger on display.

I was just wondering if there were any major differences between the 70's Plum Crazy and the current Plum Crazy?

Dave

The new plum crazy has pearl in it and is a much deeper richer looking colour. :2cents:

I really like it.   Now I'm tossed with what one to get the old or the new purple?

What do you all think?  I know it's my preference. But I'm asking all the same. 😃

I had a custom mix made & when I pulled the brake plate off the paint behind matched exactly , mine is a deep purple with a decent metallic in it most repaints seem too pale

Hard to tell on a computer sreen or even a picture , you really have to see it in person  but that still looks lighter than mine

if your gonna go with the old school color. try to find someone who had original paint color matched and get their formula.

in my area here, there was 3 mopars painted plum crazy. each was a different brand paint. i know one
was Dupont and the other was PPG and i forget what the 3rd was. each purple looked a little different.
plus it can be hard to match paint exactly when the original formula is for single stage and you want base/clear.

Do not use the Dupont FC7. It is too  light and too silvery.  My son's Challenger was an original plum crazy car, and the Sherwin-Williams FC7 mix matched the hidden areas (like behind the door panels) perfectly.

That's odd that the two formulas would be that far off from one another. Maybe the Dupont had too much metallic added to it - that will definitely lighten it up and make it silvery.

If the car was originally PCP, I might consider going old on it. However, since you are changing the color anyway, I would just go with the new as it is a "new and improved" version of the old and should be easier to source if you have to do spot repairs or touchups in the future.

Nope the original was color was Butterscotch and the car was a 318 convertible.  So I have no issues changing the color.

New color is close to the old in direct sunlight, in subdued lighting it looks darker. You cant beat original plum crazy, I will agree some of the formulations of FC7 have too much of a silver color to them and look awful. make sure you get a few spray cards done and decide from there.

I agree a lot of the colors look too light. Mine was an original color mix (don't know the brand) and I had the painter darken/richen it up. I really like the result.

I went new Plum Crazy because every test mix we did looked too silvery

I had a hard time deciding because it's the original colour

My decision was based on:
- I bought it for me, not for flipping
- no one I would be hanging with is gonna get in my face about the issue
- looks amazing to me
- I drive it a lot and I figured that the paint won't be "like new" for too long and if I change my mind down the track, then I'll do it again...

And yep, already a few chips here n there.... Oh well...

Personally I would darken the Plum Crazy up a couple shades if I were painting a car a different color than original and wanted purple. I would also ad just a touch of mini rainbow flake into the base, you would not believe what this does to purple!  :2thumbs:
