MDS, VVT, and transmission options
« on: April 11, 2016 - 12:18:43 PM »
Hello,
I'm in the early planning stage for a Gen. III hemi in my '73 cuda and have a basic question.  Can MDS and VVT features be used with older transmissions (like A500 or A518), or do they need to be paired with a late model transmission?   Thanks,
Bill

No replies here but for those asking the same question: sounds like the matching transmission must be used for MDS feature, but perhaps not for VVT.  Still researching but that's what I'm hearing elsewhere.

I don't have the answer but why would the MDS affect the transmission, or vice versa?

I'm not sure either, but when you look at instructions on retrofitting a late model transmission they want you to keep the whole system together - both engine and trans computers, wheel speed sensors, etc.  (http://www.hotwireauto.com/?page=sales-nag1) so I assume they are interdependent.

I read that, but it dosen't mention the  MDS or VVT. Many people use 5.7 engines with MDS with 727 trannys, and I cant imagine why shutting off 4 cylinders would affect the tranny, or VVT that changes the timing of the camshaft. Ask Chris @ Hotwire, if anyone has an answer it is him.
I did get a complete package for my swap though, but a 6.1, no MDS or VVT.

Update - heard from Chris at hotwire, he told me that VVT can be maintained with the older transmissions, and MDS "should" work with older trans - but he can't confirm firsthand.
