Auto to manual conversion

Hello out there!
I am about to convert my 71 cuda from auto to a 4 speed and am going to do it myself.
I'm doing it in my garage and wanted to know how high I have to get the car off the floor
with jack stands to get the old 727 out from under it? Most jack stands go up to almost 20".
Any advise would be welcome!

          Just snuck the 727 under the 69 vert. Sitting on my floor trans jack I needed 24 inches to top of bell. I went in from the side just behind the lower control arm rear mount.    :rebel:

I suggest investing in 6ton jack stands and a scissor type transmission jack. (I have Harbor Freight versions of both).

I am not going to be trying to line up a 135# 6spd by hand! :eek4:

I was able to get it out by myself with 4 jack stands each on top of about 4 square cut pieces of 2x12s....  I was broke at the time and got it out with just a floor jack and muscles by myself!

Don't do that I was sore for weeks!! Buy a transmission jack it is so much easier and you can use it for 8 3/4 center sections, gas tanks, motorcycles, etc.

When I was young and stupid, I did it that way also.  Now that I'm older and muscles ache just thinking about that stuff...........

Yup, I used to put them on my stomach and then arch up and slide them in. Not that young and stupid anymore though. Sometimes it's hard to secure them on a floor jack and I'll build a bridge/platform of wood to the correct height and then shove on the trans to slide it in.
Jackstands are generally too low for all this fun though.

6ton stands provide adequate clearance. In the picture shown I am using 6Tons on the rear and 12tons on the front, leaving -plenty- of room to work under there. Standard 3-4ton stands dont cut it for much when you have to get under the car yourself.
