This March 2010 article from Mopar Collectors Guide tells the story of the Car Craft magazine HemiCuda project car. Here we see how it was in 1970 (above right) and how it was found many years later in 1989 (below left). This HemiCuda started off a star as a Super-Stock project car in the pages of Car Craft magazine. After it's days with Car Craft in went on to become a successful Super-Stock race car until it was permanently parked in the late 1970's. The derelict remains of the once proud Car Craft HemiCuda project car was found in 1989 by Russ Welch who promptly bought it. Together with friends Dave Schultz and Brian Murphy, the trio set about to restore the HemiCuda to it's former glory complete with it's gold-leaf Car Craft livery.

Not only is this car pink, but it is as we can see from the display placard it is totally loaded with options too!

May 9th



Deja-vu? No, I'm not recycling cars yet. This is JS23R1B108805 - assembly line fraternal twin to May 4th's 108804. They both are part of a "batch" (reportedly 7) of Hemi Challenger RT's ordered by Mr Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge. 108805 is very similar to 108804 in that both are finished in FE5 Bright Red with V6W White RT stripes, a H6X9 black interior, and a N96 Shaker hood, but unlike 804 which has a 4-speed, 805 is equipped with an automatic and Elastomeric bumpers. It may not be a "Super" Challenger like 804, but it still a "super-sweet" Challenger none the less!

May 10th



This is (or was?) mega-collector Tim Wellborne's car. It is 1 of only 107 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 48 with an automatic. It is finished in FE5 Rallye-Red with a V1X black vinyl top, V6X black "billboard" stripes and a H6X9 black vinyl interior. I don't know the VIN of this car .. but I would like to ... so if you know it, please pass it on to me.



Here it is on display at Wellborne's Muscle Car Museum in Alabama. The car is a real beauty and is equipped with the A22 Elastomeric Front and Rear Bumpers Package, A62 Rallye Gauge Package, A67 Backlight Louver Package, B51 Power Disc Brakes, G36 painted Sport Mirrors, J81 Go-Wing and a R36 AM/FM Cassette with Microphone Radio among other things.

How about a convertible? BS27R0B242128 is 1 of only 18 1970 Hemi Cuda convertibles ever made. 1 of 14 made for the U.S. market and of those, 1 of only 5 with a 4-speed. It is finished in FC7 In-Violet with a H6X9 black vinyl interior and a V3X black convertible top. Here it is at the Hemi E-body convertible invitational at the 2015 MCACN show in Chicago.



Most of the hemi E-body convertibles have an interesting back story and BS27R0B242128 is no exception. Before Wade Ogle acquired the car and restored it, it was known as "Bass Boat" because of it's heavily metal flaked 1970's inspired psychodelic paint job done by Joe Bryant. May 12th

Today we have JS29R0B155690, 1 of only 60 1970 Hemi Challenger RT/SE' made for the U.S. market, and of those, 1 of 37 with an automatic. It is finished in EV2 Hemi Orange with V6X black longitudinal stripes, a V1X black vinyl top and a HRX9 black leather interior. As we can see, it also sports a N94 TA-style Fresh Air Hood, which according to the current owner, was installed by the dealership at the original owner's request.



The current owner installed a single four-barrel intake and carb setup, but fortunately retained all of the original pieces. The larger air filter base plate on the right is the ultra-rare base plate used with the N94 Fresh Air Hood - imagine trying to find one of those now?

BS23R1B175222 is 1 of only 107 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 48 with an automatic. It is finished in GB5 Blue-Fire with V6X black "billboard" stripes and a SRX9 black leather interior. She hasn't always looked this pretty, beneath that beautiful skin lies a very disturbingly dark and twisted past.



Yikes! For some inexplicable reason, this car was crushed and buried in an Indiana cornfield! Whether it was because it was wrecked, stolen or the result of something more sinister - who knows? A hole was dug and this car was shoved into it and crushed down by a bucket loader (you can see the puncture marks of the bucket's leading edge in the left quarter-panel). Many years later it was dug up in an attempt to salvage it. Although the original crushed car was a true HemiCuda (makes me misty-eyed just thinking about it), very little of the original car was salvageable and made it into the resurrected and rebodied "Cornfield Cuda".



The resurrected and rebodied "Cornfield Cuda" as she looks today. Even though it is a rebodied original with a a tragic and somewhat surreal history, this HemiCuda is still a beauty. The owner better get that beauty off the farm as quick as they can before something happens and it winds up taking another "dirt nap" in the cornfield in the background!

Was out of town for the weekend to attend a graduation ... lost a few days ... where was I?

May 17th



What's that hiding in the garage? A '70 Cuda with what looks like a Shaker hood. Further investigation is definitely required ...



At first glance it may look like a white AAR, but a closer inspection revealed it to actually be a True-Blue HemiCuda. I'm not sure, but I think this car may be BS23R0B144858 which was sold new in Barrie Ontario. The car is a former race car and was retired from the track and placed into storage way back in 1974. When the owner stored it, he employed a weird way of trying to preserve it by covering the car and all of its components in a thick coat of motor oil! 31 years later when the car was found a thin film of oil remained on the outside of the car but the interior floor pans, where the oil had eventually drained to over the years, had a 1/2" of standing oil in them!



As a former race car, this HemiCuda has accumulated only 1,648 miles before being placed into storage in 1974. As of 2005 the owner insisted that the car was not for sale and that he was going to ... wait for it ... restore it someday! Now how many times have we heard that before? That was 11 years ago now ... wonder how he's making out with the restoration?

BS23R0B234614 is 1 of only 652 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 368 with an automatic. It is finished in EB3 Ice-Blue with V6X black "hockey stick" stripes and a PRX9 black leather interior. Unlike some of the High-Impact colors, EB3 Ice-Blue must not of been too popular as I know of less than a half-dozen HemiCudas painted in this color. I don't know about buyers "back in the day", but I actually like EB3 Ice-Blue

BS23R0B146537 is 1 of only 652 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 368 with an automatic. It is a "triple-black" car finished in TX9 Black-Velvet with a V1X black vinyl top and a H6X9 black vinyl interior.



This HemiCuda is nicely equipped with the A32 Super-Performance 4:10 geared 8.75" Axle Package, A62 Rallye Gauges, B51 Power Disc Brakes and a C16 Center Console among other things. This fender tag is interesting in that it looks authentic in that the font, texture and weathering of the tag look appropriate - but is it? The V6R code for "red" Hockey Stick Stripes questions the whole thing being that the "hockey stick" stripes were suppose to be available only in black (V6X). Custom ordered stripes? A fake fender tag? Who knows?



Red Hockey Stick Stripes? Were they custom ordered stripes? Is it a fake fender tag? Who knows but I do like the way the red "hockey stick" strips look on the Black Velvet paint!
