$5600 was a lot for a car in those days. That would be like buying a Hellcat  money wise. What was the average price for a 70 Challenger ? $3500 nicely equipped? Glad someone was able to pony up the funds though, nice to look at!

So true!

But a mere pitance compared to what they are selling for today ... but who knew? :dunno:

On to todays featured ride ...

BS23R0B146509 is 1 of only 652 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 368 with an automatic. It is finished in FE5 Rallye-Red with V6X black "hockey stick" stripes and a H6X9 black vinyl interior.

This HemiCuda is equipped with the A22 Elastomeric Bumpers Package, A34 Super-Track-Pack 4:10 geared Dana Axle Package, A62 Rallye Gauges, B51 Power Disc Brakes, C16 Center Console, G11 tinted glass, G36 painted Sport Mirrors and a S83 Rim-Blow Steering Wheel among other things.

This red beauty last sold at the 2011 Russo and Steele Montery auction for $146K
Cheers!

What I recall is hemicuda's never came with wheelwell trim.

Maybe just the early production or promo models.
The reason was that the front end weight, the car's front end would go lower causing the tires to get side wall cuts.

Not really,  inflation calculator says $5600 in 1970 is equal to $34673.24 in 2016.   Working backwards a $80000 hellcat would be $12920 in 1970

I googled  "inflation calculator" never knew that existed. Learned something new.
I wonder/question now accurate it is but I guess it's close enough for a general comparison as I used one and got a slightly different answer ( 1000 dollars difference)  that and most people I know are not making more ( many less)than they were 10 years ago. ( but I'm in Canada)

I don't know how accurate they are either,  for the comparison purposes I used a USA inflation calculator as inflation seems higher here (I'm in Canada too).

Sounds like you need to move west and get out of the Ontario rut,  lots of room in Saskatchewan for more e bodies ;)

As a salute to law enforcement, today's feature car is the "black and white" 1971 HemiCuda BS23R1B275819

This black and white beauty was originally ordered and purchased by a San Francisco Bay Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer. Like a CHP cruiser, this car sports a V02 two-tone GW3 Sno-White top over a TX9 Black-Formal body. But wait, the similarities don't stop there. It also has a front bench seat interior and a column shifted automatic transmission! I can only imagine that the CHP Officer who ordered it purposely did so to match his CHP cruiser!  :dunno:

When this picture was taken at the 1986 "Power in the Pines" show at the Kirkwood Ski Resort in California, the car was wearing white Billboards and a black bench interior, but from looking at the fender tag we can see that this car originally came equipped with V5X black vinyl side mouldings and a H4XW white bench interior. Also from the fender tag, the lack of an axle code indicates that the car came with the standard 3:23 geared rear axle - perfect for high-speed "pursuits" down the California freeways!  :woo:

Today's feature car is another car bought new by a member of law enforcement - a State Trooper in Connecticut. JS23R0B218163 is 1 of only 287 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 137 with a 4-speed. It is finished in EK2 Go-Mango with a H6X9 black vinyl interior.

This blaze orange Hemi Challenger didn't stay on the street for too long and by the end of the '70's it had become a dedicated race car. In the quest to become quicker and faster, the Challenger was extensively modified in the way that serious race cars are. It had a 14 point roll cage installed, was back-halfed and tubbed, and had virtually all extraneous panels and stuff trimmed or removed to lighten it. Wish I had a pic of it in it's racing heyday but unfortunately I don't.

Somewhere around 1999-2000 someone took note that there was a "R" as the fifth character of this car's VIN. The car was retired from racing and changed hands a few times before it wound up with Kevin Jensen around 2004. Kevin turned the car over to Blue Star Performance where Mike Lagattaglia, Mark Sekula and Jim Leonatti had to work a lot of magic to return the old track warrior back to it's pre race car appearance. As can be seen by the following pictures, it looks like they did one heck of a job!

Today's selection is BS23R0B180461, 1 of only 652 made for the U.S. market, and of those 1 of 284 with a 4 speed. It is finished in EF8 Ivy-Green with white "hockey stick" stripes, a V1W white vinyl top and a H6X9 black vinyl interior.

From the fender tag, we can see that this HemiCuda came equipped with the Super-Track-Pack 4:10 geared Dana Axle Package, A62 Rallye Gauges Package and V5F green vinyl side mouldings (instead of the "hockey stick" stripes) among other things.

This green fish looks gorgeous! The white "hockey stick" stripes compliment the white vinyl top perfectly. Never could understand with the myriad of colors available for the vinyl side mouldings, longitudinal and Bumble-Bee stripes (on the Challenger) why Plymouth only offered the "hockey-stick" stripe in black? A black "hockey-stick" on this car simply would not look as good as the white one does. :2cents:

Here is an ad for a 1971 HemiCuda that I found from the April 1997 issue of Mopar Collector's Guide ...

Wow! Numbers matching engine with a 4-speed and a 4:10 geared Super-Track-Pack axle.  Sassy-Grass-Green (one of my ATF colors) with a white interior. :2thumbs: Elastomeric bumpers, rear window louvers and a Go-Wing.  Rallye dash, Rim-Blow steering wheel, Six-Way seat and power windows too! :droolingbounce: And to top it all off he has the build-sheet too! :woo: This awesome machine could of been yours (or mine) for $50K, which compared to what this thing would demand today, seems like a steal. All you had to do is call Scott (I think this may have been Scott Lindsey who owned it). Wonder who bought it ... any of you C-C.com members?? :dunno:

Today we have another of the elite convertibles. This is (I believe?) JS27R0B307215 (pretty sure that's the VIN ... correct me if I'm wrong on this) formerly of the Dave Christenholz collection and restored by Apex Autosports. It is 1 of only 12 Hemi Challenger convertibles ever made and 1 of only 9 made for the U.S. market.

This Hemi Challenger RT convertible is 1 of 5 painted FC7 Plum-Crazy. With all of the colors available in 1970 it is interesting that 5 of the 12 (an amazing 42%) were finished in FC7. This one is a 4-speed, has a H6X9 black vinyl interior, a V3X black convertible top and is a V68 stripe delete car.

Maybe you guys have seen this one lately. It was recently on  :ebay:  and Cars-On-Line dot com as part of a very interesting "package deal".

BS23R0B146410 is 1 of only 45 made for the Canadian market. It is finished in EV2 Tor-Red with V6X black "hockey stick" stripes and a H6XW white vinyl interior.

It's a little hard to read, but from the fender tag we can see that this car came equipped with the A01 Light Group Package; A32 Super Performance 4:10 geared 8.75" Axle Package; A62 Rallye Gauge Package; B51 Power Disc Brakes; C16 Center Console; G36 Dual Painted Sport Mirrors and a R11 AM Radio among other things.

The cleanliness and level of detail on this car is amazing. I don't thing the undercarriage ever looked that good coming out of the factory when it was new!

Here is the best part. What could be better than a numbers matching Tor-Red 1970 HemiCuda? How about a "package deal" that includes two other Cuda's? Yes that is right! In June 2016 an ad ran on ebay where the seller wanted to sell three Cuda's as "package deal" that included the aforementioned Tor-Red automatic 1970 HemiCuda; a non-numbers matching Sassy-Grass-Green 4-speed 1970 HemiCuda; and a numbers matching Bahama-Yellow automatic 1971 440 Six-Barrel Cuda! Wow! All three cars could have been had for the ultimate "trifecta" ... if you could afford it that is. If you have the financial resources and the will to drop that kind of $$$$ I think this "package deal" is still available. Bang it here to see the original  :ebay:  ad in which the seller's phone number is listed.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plymouth-Barracuda-/122019135822?forcerrptr=true&hash=item1c68e8414e:g:jwQAAOSwvg9XZKwS&item=122019135822
