Hot Air Cleaner!
« on: April 28, 2016 - 10:13:31 PM »
So I've been driving my car to work the last couple days. Today after I got home I popped the hood after sitting for 5 minutes and the air cleaner was so hot I almost couldn't touch it. What are you doing to help underhood  temps? Should I make the rallye scoops functional or get one of those ram box air intakes?
Just got new Dougs headers. Any way to keep the heat in the pipe, I.E. Insulate? I hear header wrap is a big no no.

remove the inner fender well plates that provide access for adjusting the upper control arms.

Header wrap will help with the heat but it will get wet and rust out your header quickly. Try making the hood scoops functional. Also check your engine coolant temperature with an accurate IR temp gun. The thermostat may need to be replaced with a 180 deg.

Coated headers will REALLY reduce the underhood temps/  Wraps, to me, tend to look bad after just a few hundred miles

Like the last post said, remove all the block off plates used to access the camber/caster adjustments.  That will really help with extracting underhood temps

Id hold off on removing the rally hood block offs.  Water will get inside the engine bay when washing or raining

May be worth removing the hood to cowl seal if you still have one. It limits the function of the in-dash cowl vents, but provides and area for airflow through the hood.

Yeah the air filter is dirty, getting a little powdered belt on the engine. Haven't figured that one out yet. Not a lot but still some. I didn't get a chance to work on the car, will get to it next weekend.

So I pulled the hood to cowl seal as suggested. I'm going to remove the camber caster adjustment covers and make the hood functional. I've noticed that the coolant temperature starts creeping up when I am cruising at 70 at 3500 RPMs, AC on. Doesn't overheat though. When I slow down it cools down. Maybe timing or lack of underhood airflow. Putting in some highway gears this weekend so I will see how that changes things.

How do you guys insulate your fuel lines? I'm not vapor locking but I think it could only help. I want to try the wood spacer but have NO hood clearance. Maybe I can mod the hood to fit the spacer.

I think that seal is there to prevent engine compartment fumes from entering the fresh air vent, I would think twice before removing it. If you don't see much improvement with it removed, I would put it back on.

Having a hot air cleaner after the car sits and "heat soaks"  for 5 minutes is normal. If it runs fine after that 5 minutes, I wouldn't worry about it.

It does run fine, but runs better on colder days for sure.

Making the hood scoops "functional" willwork against you.  You are trying to evacuate air,  not add more.
