Time for a new computer - Help
« on: April 29, 2016 - 12:29:08 PM »
Our desktop is about 7 years old I think. The internet is very slow and sometimes give a warning that our "browser is no longer supported". We are using Windows XP I believe. Talked to a computer shop this morning about a new one. They are suggesting Windows 7 on a new Lenova would suit our needs the best. We mostly use it for internet, email, a small amount of spreadsheet work and storing pictures off our camera. No games, graphic designing, etc. What do you computer savy geeks think?

Sounds like you use yours for the exact same reasons I use mine. I upgraded my machine from XP and am very happy with Windows 7 BUT extended support will end January 14, 2020. I was also told to stay away from windows 10 for the time being.

Thanks John. I had heard the warnings about Windows 10. Thanks for the heads up about support for 7 ending. I'll have to ask about that.

Get a Mac, I been using both systems since computers were invented, Mac is easier and better, but more expensive.
No support needed, there will be a short time of getting used to some small differences.

You drive a Mopar right, not a Chevy or a Mazda or.....  :grinno:

Have you got it yet Neil? Is it all you expected? That's a hell of a deal.

it's a good bang for the buck for sure and with 2900+ feedback, I wouldn't worry. these units are usually old office PCs that are perfectly fine, the companies just upgraded due to out of warranty status (my company does the same thing for the most part). the specs on that one tells me they are @ 7 years old, but should still have a few years left for the basic user (I'm running a dell laptop now with similar specs, still plugging away like a champ and I have over 20,000 hours logged on it).

Can't imagine why anyone would buy a desktop, when a laptop will do all you need and still fit into your briefcase and go wherever you want?

No briefcase.   I'm not someone who needs a computer on the go. A little old school maybe. Plus I like the bigger screen of a desktop.

I am waiting for my HP to die so I have the excuse to by a Mac. I am so tired of Windows always being jacked up in some manner or another. I finally bought an IPAD a little while ago, can't be happier. I applaud you holding out on updating windows for so long. 10 is better than the last few window versions, but still sucks. Spend a few dollars more, and get a MAC.

I agree with the comment about a desktop. Get a laptop.

It's nice to get away from all of it once in awhile, spent 8 days going thru the Grand Canyon and never missed any of the computer phone touchscreen crap.
It did help that that is an awesome trip and I highly recommend.

But that is a nice deal.

Yes I have it works great for all I do . not bad for just over $100 !!
Well my computer never moves & I do have a useless laptop I could take with me if it is that important
Why buy a Laptop 3x the price for what you get , hard to replace components if there is a problem , desktops run cooler & generally last longer & are more expandable , more screen options too
 To each their own

I have been told by lots of mac mavens that macs are better. I'm a computer guy, but I have a hell of a time figuring out how to ' get things done' with a mac. I own two of them, (and four windows machines and a linux) but they will be my last ones. I'll go with the cheaper and better windows OS. With my way of thinking, everything is more difficult on an Apple computer.
I would get a Windows 10 PC Murray. Windows 7 is already out of the supply line.
