70 Challenger Splash Shield questions
« on: April 30, 2016 - 06:29:06 PM »
Got 2 questions on underhood splash shields for a 1970 E body.  First off, the 2 plastic shields that go up front below and to the sides of the radiator fan area.  Are these attached to the subframe by rivets?  There are no captured nuts in the frame I can see and I saw someone selling rivets for E body splash shields.  Wanted to confirm.
Second, there are 2 rubber material shields that install further back on the inner fenders near the firewall.  DMT sells repros and I bought the set for a 1970.  The set for a '71 is different as the drivers side one has a small hole they say for a brake line or something.  I had this side shield in my boxes of old dirty parts and it has the hole.  I assume it came off my April build T/A when it was being disassembled, but can't say for sure if it didn't get mixed in from something else.  Did '70's ever come with the shield with the hole in it?

Rivits is correct, I've owned a few late 70 E bodies with the second design splash shield...

Thanks Randy, I guess I'll see if I can clean up this splash shield with the hole and reuse it with the new clips I got, or else I have to order up another set from DMT.
And see if I can get my rivet gun up in that space to rivet those plastic shield in place!

It's not a rivet. It's a spring clip. I'll see if I can find one today and show you. Just took them off my car for more air flow.
Its just a little 340 with a miss

The 2 rubber like material shields that install on the inner fenders are installed with spring clips.
The 2 plastic shields that attach on the bottom of the subframe have witness marks from where either a washer or rivet pressed against the plastic in the 2 mounting holes.
On my 70 vert there are some sort of press in plastic retainers being used, but I'm guessing the previous owner used those to attach the shields when he restored the car because they were convenient and they were not an area many would be looking anyway.

The rivets are for the plastic shields down by the K member along side the strut rods.... And they are definitely rivets...

The flexible flaps allowed access to the UCA adjusting nuts and were held on by spring clips. As I understand it, on the '70's, the brake line wrapped under the frame rail.  On the ''71, the brake line was routed through the empty space, so the flap had a hole for the line.

:iagree:

And 1 WIld RT is spot on about the rivets on the hard plastic/abs splash shields that attach to the frame rail. Rivets with a large washer incorporated to the rivet itself.
