No power. only horn works.
« on: April 30, 2016 - 09:17:00 PM »
I had an issue with the black ammeter wire smoking at the bulkhead connector so I bypassed it and ran new wire to alternator but now I have no power, no lights, only the horn works. I cant figure out how i lost power by rewiring. I even tried bypassing the ammeter also with no luck. Can anyone tell me what else may have fried or point me in a direction to help find the issue. I also tried a new starter relay. Thanks in advance.

What model and year car do you have? First thought is to check the fuse link from the starter relay into the harness.

It's actually in a 1966 fury. 440 electronic ignition converted. Fusible link looks good still. No burns or heat bubbles dosent feel broken or stretchy. I just replaced it last summer. I will check resistance through it.

Did you run a whole new wire from the amp gauge? The black wire powers most of the dash so you need to tie it in.

That looks like it may be the problem. According to wiring diagram it just shows from alternator to ammeter. Dosent show everything being tied in. Will attempt to fix tomorrow and let you know. Thanks for pointing this out.

That 5 wire splice is also a potential heat/fire source. Do a good job of the splice. Clean wires and good quality butt splice connector.  :2cents:
