I was a musician and thought if I didn't change my life style and settle down before long I wasn't going to last much longer.
I met a girl I thought was the greatest thing I had ever seen, she liked what I liked, we had so much in common.

I have now been married 40 years and I think marriage should be like the army, you re-enlist every five years.
I don't believe there would be very many lifers if that were the case.

Women marry men thinking they will change and we don't.....Men marry women thinking they won't change and they do.

Cheers!

Security and protection for the children?  :clueless:

Providing a good environment and upbringing for your child has nothing to do with marriage.
So marriage "forces" you to do something you wouldn't otherwise?

If you are not married and have children they are called illegitimate child. The child does not carry the father name unless married.
And there are a lot out there.
You marry have children to give them your name, a father image, a secure home, education.Teach them good morals, respect.

There is an inherent disadvantage to not having both a father and mother figure in your home growing up.  Having a single parent is difficult, not to say you can't turn out well, of course.

I've only been married for almost 3 years but I love my wife dearly.  Those that say marriage isn't worth it obviously married the wrong woman!

The Bible says marriage will be hard, and you will struggle, per the Apostle Paul.
So, it takes hard work, caring, communication, and committment.
Love is not a feeling. Its committment and actions, and sacrifice.
But, the Bible says it is also not good for man to be alone.

Paul also says "I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am." 1 Corinthians 7:7-8

Some have the gift of marriage, being a team, and some singleness.  Maybe Paul could not have completed everything he did if he was married.  Most people marry, and I agree with Bob that it is damn hard work and takes the unrelenting commitment of two, but it is not for everyone.

As a happily married man, I still feel the need to lay this out there....

Consider life in Mayberry U.S.A.  The Andy Griffith Show.  They had an idyllic life going on there. Why did they have such a great life you ask? Well, they were all single. Andy, Aunt Bee, Gomer, Barney, Helen, etc....

The only married guy on the show was Otis. And he stayed drunk and in jail all the time.  Coincidence?  I think not.....    :grinno:

Being single leads to a TON of 1st kisses and awkward / funny dates.  You have the ability to keep a bunch of lines in the water and still stop fishing when you want to do something other than "fish" ...    Find what you love to do and do it.    When you get the chance to date - do it.    Do you and women will see how much fun you have.   Especially your buddy's girlfriends/wives.

I think this scripture was more directed to Paul's ability to faithfully and wholeheartedly serve the lord Jesus Christ.  Most on here make the excuse that staying single allows you to "have fun" and "go on lots of dates" and "only worry about yourself."  This is why I disagree of your interpretation of this scripture because it's completely off course in my opinion.  It is hard and not many of us have the strength or faith to devote every aspect of our lives to Jesus although we try the best we can.

Your taking scripture completely out of context.  Read the first part of chapter 7 and you will see Paul starts by stressing that a man should only have sexual relations with his wife and likewise and verse 8-9 say this:

8 Now to the unmarried[a] and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

Again there is nothing wrong with staying single, but using scripture to justify most people's reasons for not marrying is not right.
