Suggestions for paint for hood project

Well, we did it.....finally got around to getting a hood scoop and mounting it on a spare flat hood we picked up 3 years ago at Carlisle....LOL

Went with the bolt-on 6 pack fiberglass scoop.....the scoop itself is not perfect...but for what it is, work good I think.

I think it looks pretty sick.   

Since I know color matching the hood and scoop to the rest of the car would require professional paint shop work, for now we are going to just paint it black ourselves.

I have a HVLP spray gun from harbor freight and was thinking of going that route rather than spray bombs. Havent done a car panel before with a gun....so I am nervous.

We still have to sand it all down and prep etc but when we get to that time, what do you guys recommend paint wise? 

Going black under the hood and on top.....I am hoping for the organisol (sp?) look...flat black......but I want something that will hold up OK with weather, etc and not scratch easy etc.

Looking for primer suggestions too.

Wonder how compatible the SEM stuff is with spray bomb primer?

We havent started to prep the hood yet......but I figured that we could use spray bomb primer as we went, figuring it would take several days to sand and prep the hood.....then using it as guide coat as well....

Or should I just plan on using the gun for primer too?

I just sprayed sem hot rod black, I was told not to put it over aerosol primer. I used sem metalock primer/sealer and then shot the hot rod black over. Lays pretty nice.

FWIW, I had my fender braces covered in rustoleum self etching to prevent rust and shot sem aersol trim over it and it immediately crinkled up and reacted horribly. I'd imagine hot rod black would be even worse..

Nason or auto body masters both make A good urethane 2 part primer. any bare metal will need etch primer. I would not use rattle can primer unless it's SEM self etch primer in A rattle can, I have used that with good results.

I emailed SEM about it and they said they sell SEM High build primer surfacer in spray bombs I can use between stages......they also suggested that I use a "catalyzed epoxy primer or sealer before applying Hot Rod Black"

They are saying I will need TWO kits to get two coats on each side of the hood.  Was hoping I could get away with one......its like $90 a kit.....grrrrr.

Looked online and their "hi build primer" is like $17 a can..and one can covers only 11 square feet......yikes!

Not to mention whatever the sealer will cost......I assume that using the sealer and these primers would mean that i DONT have to get every single spot of old paint off the hood right?   I did plan on getting the outside of the hood pretty bare, but the inside surface I was hoping a little more leeway....

Maybe I should just go with rustoleum bombs for the whole job and cross my fingers....LOL

I used 1 kit and painted A shaker hood, both sides. I would use what I said earlier, and maybe A dark sealer. again auto body master's. with the dark sealer you won't use as much paint. urethane primer and guide coat will help you to block it out and find your flaws.

I would highly recommend that you do not spray can paint that hood, you are not going to be happy. Too much flat area, it will most likely tiger stripe. You can get a quart of high build primer from eastwood for like $40. It is DTM (direct to metal) so you don't need an etching primer as well. Stop by your local auto parts store and look at their black paint, I know O'Reillys carries quart paint which I believe is a lacquer base but should do what you want.

you may be able to get what you need at your local napa, depending on where you are located.  they'll take a gloss and mix flattener in at no charge,   or you can also go to your local finishmasters,  if there are any in your area.

WHere did you end up buying the SEM primer locally?  Cant seem to find it and hwne I do its $20 a can!  Yikes!

I just dont want to use a flat that mars or otherwise looks crappy....the SEM Hot Rod black seems to address all the issues with flat paint.

Just cant get over how damn expensive their spray bomb primer is!!!!!!!!!

The plan is to use the spray bombs as we work on the hood over a period of however long it takes to keep areas we sand etc from flash rusting....then use a gun to spray a final coat of primer/sealer and the actual HRB paint.

Though I suppose a NAPA paint would be less pricey overall.....

did you look into what Eastwoods may have?  Perhaps they have something that will cover your needs and still be reasonable for your budget

   I was planning on using PPG Omni epoxy primer in black for the underside of my hood and as a sealer. Then save the SEM HR black for the topside.

Try Eastwood for epoxy primer or polyurethane primer in pint kits. They are 2 part chemistry, use a primer HVLP gun and go for it. Spray can primer is generally cheap lacquer base primer that will develop rust areas under your top coat soon after application. It is CRAP.
