Wheel Seal Orientation - Front Axle

I had a noise in the front of my car.  Thinking it was probably a bad wheel bearing I popped the calipers off, took off the rotors, removed bearings, seals, and races. Went to the local parts stores and got the parts I needed.

I'm embarrassed to say (now) I can't remember how the seals go in.  The seals I got are Timken's and have the rubber "boot" on one side.

Does that boot go in the hub "toward" the bearing, or does it stick out and go into the recess on the spindle?

The car is a 73 Cuda 340.

Usually the spring side goes towards the grease, but i'm not sure by your description. Some Mopar seals are hydro-dynamic and have in integral dust seal. Can you post a pic or a part number?

The "boot" faces out when looking at the back of the rotor....   Before tapping it in, make sure it fits the seal surface on the spindle...

Quite sure mine didn't have a large protrusion like that...doesn't mean it's wrong just a different style 
 From the few pics I've seen of that style it seems the protrusion of rubber (pic. top) would go toward the axle

Let your common sense take over. There's no way to drive that seal in on the lip side- so, put it in the rotor with the  smooth, steel back showing up and drive it in, on said back. Easy, eh?

EXCEPT YOUR WRONG...  70-72 have a flat metal face, 73-74 have the seal shown above which has a normal seal backside and a protruding lip on the outside...

The way to do it is to tap the metal flange outside the protruding lip.... Personally I use a an old bearing race as a driver...  If you think I'm wrong go get a Timken 5121 & have a look at it, thy aren't like most seals... Hell I worked for a bearing company, I think I might know what I'm talking about...

  That rubber protrusion is the dust boot. It rides on the spindle to help seal out dirt from the bearings. Faces outwards, it was an improved design to the earlier type seal, and a pain to install. You will need to find a driver that doesn't crush the dust seal. A thinwall socket or a piece of pipe ground out with a Dremel etc.
