cuda fuel cap and fuel line routing
« on: May 06, 2016 - 09:37:37 AM »
been looking for a fuel cap for a 1971 cuda, want stock style but unsure of what style that was... I have ordered three from various venders, none fit, two are too small one is too big. anyone know where the correct one can be found? car has the stock fuel tank and neck spout set up under rear license plate. would prefer a non locking, but unsure if that was an option.

Also want to know what the proper fuel line/ vent setup for this car, tank has 4 tubes out side, one 5/16  from pump, 340 v-8. what goes where, should it have vented or non vented cap and where does each line go?
should it have that trunk line loop on passenger side?

The 4 lines out the side are your vent lines, you don't need a vented cap.  I would highly suggest this is a perfect time to switch the fuel sending unit to a 3/8" main - 5/16" return line set up, add a 3/8" fuel line as your main line and change your 5/16" line for a return.  This allows for cooler and better fuel flow/pressure.  You can add a fuel filter (after the pump) with a 1 inlet and 2 outlet for this set up.  I have it on my 340 and 440 engines.

Dave at Roseville has all these parts.

so the spout is not vented, so non vented cap, the tank has 4 fittings, all together along one side, so should these receive some form of the loop vents in trunk and through the one frame rail set up,(pic below) or is it to have the vapor liquid separator collector?

If so how do these connect, even with the lines, I don't see how all 4 fittings would be used?

would it be possible to plug all 4 side vents and just put on a vented cap?

It can be done , as long as the tank is vented in some way .
the problem is the vented cap is one year only & very expensive but  there should be other workable options

okay, vented cap, is that what most recommend, just plug all lines on tank and put on vented cap, or can the proper vent system be found?

....again Anlauto to the rescue!

okay, so that setup is correct for a 71,... huh,
so does it mount in the trunk on passenger side up along inner fender joint like the 70  style?
what does the 5th line in this vent hook to? (as my tank has 4 vent lines and no return line. )

Yes it mounts in the same area as a 70 set-up. The fifth line is a 5/16 and it hooks to a steel line which runs to the front of the car, up the PS inner apron and hooks to the valve cover breather cap.

If you check out the link below it shows the opening on the passenger side trunk extension. It attaches with either 3 or 4 Phillips heads with washers.

For some reason they don't list a cap for 71. The only cap I found and use on my 71 is a chrome cap from napa 703-1220 It does fit and work and you cant see it with the license plate down.

looks like I may have to go the napa route...
as I just received another incorrect fuel cap that purchased from someone claiming it would be the correct one.

so all 71 cuda had this setup?
even though it says "California" emissions
and weren't all 71's equipped with this  ECS system?

I have located and ordered a original ECS vent for the fuel tank.

so if I understand with this I should then use a non vented cap correct?
