Spraying paint at home advice?
« on: May 06, 2016 - 09:53:09 AM »
So I am working on a hood for the fish......was planning on a flat black look, and I have another thread covering that....

But as I searched for information on the interweb, I came across some folks saying that they got very sick spraying the urtehane products I am planning on using.

I sprayed my trunk with spray bombs made from PPG paint a few years back....I have an attached garage and did it in the fall......wore a mask and all and didnt die....but I realize that is a different type of paint. And my house did stink for awhile after...LOL

I know older guys who sprayed entire cars "back in the day" with nary a mask in site in the garages and they are still living....

That said, I know the paints have changed big time.  Urethane seems to be a particular ugly one.....

Should I rethink spraying the hood myself?  I am itchy to try my hand at painting...I dont want to overthink this,  but I also dont want to die in the process...LOL....

I just sprayed my car in my garage. Have a lot of ventilation, wear a good mask and clean the heck out it. Spray in the optimal conditions that the paint recommends. Not being in a booth, you want everything else to be in check as much as possible.

I was thinking of getting sheet plastic and hanging it in the garage to make a bot of a "booth" and use plastic on the floor as well maybe....that or maybe using my outdoor tent garage, and tarping the wood floor.....

Ventilation can be tricky since that means fans of some kind and if you use the wrong type of fan.....well, the vapors could ignite right?

:2cents: It can be done. I had good results spraying single stage EV2 on my car in my garage. Has the same amount of orange peel as today's production cars.

I've got a 3 car garage (double, single) and I setup a makeshift booth on the double side by attaching strips of 1x2 on the ceiling to attach plastic sheeting to. Made a "door" + frame out of the 1x2 as well for ease of entry/exit and wrapped that in plastic.  Also a frame for the large intake fan and bank of exhaust fans with filters to go with all them.  I anchored the plastic sheeting to the floor by wrapping it in 2x4s.  Lots of shop lights outside of the plastic aimed at what I was spraying - the more the better.

Blow the ceiling, walls, car, and anything that could have dust - did that multiple times and different directions, get every nook and cranny.
Mop the floor - did that multiple times until I was satisfied the floor was as clean as I could get it.
Wipe down the car - did that 3 times.

I used a full spray suit (head to toe) I bought at HD and a borrowed supplied breathing system. If I didn't have the system, I would have used a mask with a _fresh_ filter that filters volatile organics for each spraying session. Don't want to mess around with VOCs and especially isocyanates - the isos are what get you sick.

Used 2 guns: a FLG4 for epoxy primer/sealer and high build, and a Sagola 4500 Xtreme for the color coat.

Watch the paint pot life and thoroughly clean the gun afterwards.

Plan your painting pattern in advance and watch your hoses.

For the hood, I'd position it horizontally like it were on the car using some saw horses.  If it were hanging vertically, there would be a good chance of runs due to the large surface area.

Good luck!

While it is true that the modern Urethane base coat paints have a lot of volatile vapors in them, only spraying a hood shouldn't take more than one to three minutes per coat.  Heck you can hold your breath that long!!  Just wear a simple mask, you can buy them for about $15 at Harbour Freight.

Using one of those I have sprayed my car in my garage and suffered no ill effects.

So three fans?   Two exhausts fans and one intake fan in the middle?  Does the spacing matter between the exhaust fan and the intake fan?  I've got 3 20" standard fans and planning to frame one together.

I have 12 fans up.   More the better.  Effectiveness always depends on the wind.    Cover everything. And then some.   Wet the floor,See how it drains.  I use aluminum tape bent up 90* to keep water where I want it.  Be prepared for a big mess.  No such thing as a little overspray.  It skims on top of the water.  Squeege as soon as u can after.  It will trash the floor.     Most spray it flat.  But that almost guarantees dirt.  And you can't cut/buff a flat finish.  So I've been priming mine both ways.   Probably gonna hang it.   :dunno:     Less dirt.

I did pretty well what everyone else is saying. I sparyed on a non wind day. I opened one garage door about 8 inches. And dump a lot of water under the gap and out side the door, to keep any dust from blowing back in. I also misted water on the garage floor the help keep dust down. I was surprised to see that I didnt have anything in my paint job.

Thanks for the feedback folks!

Got my supplies in the Fedex yesterday from Eastwood.....   :cooldancing:

The gun I have has a 1.4mm nozzle......should that work for all three stages?

Should work for most paints except high build as those tend to like larger sizes (1.8-2.2), but check the product sheets for manufacturer recommendations to be 100% sure.

I contacted eastwood and they said to use 1.8 for the primers and the1.4 for the topcoat.  Guess I need to buy another gun.....I do have an old bottom feeder type gun....but not sure about its size either.

You can buy A cheap primer gun and just use it strictly for primer. hi solids urethane serfacers like the bigger tips. make sure to use etch primer on any bare metal. :2cents:

I've shot 2k urethane at my house on several occasions. I get a new respirator from Harbor Freight, plastic "booth" with just an exhaust fan to keep things moving. Never an issue.

I have not shot an A-surface of an entire car or anything, but for the parts and components I have shot, I have had pretty good results.

I looked at Harbor Freight this weekend.....the only guns they have with the 1.8 nozzles are the suction type.  I have one of those already.

Or, someone said if you contact HF directly they can sell you replacement tips for the HVLP guns.....

But seeing as I am cheap....any reason I cant just use the suction type one I have for the epoxy primer and urethane filler primer?

I have a few Devilbiss siphon feed guns that I use to use all the time for primer, as long as the tip is big enough and you pay attention to where you hold the gun its fine IMO
