Seeking Stereo Speakers for my Shop
« on: May 06, 2016 - 08:40:12 PM »
So I've had a decent sound system for years and the elements finely took a toll on my speakers. But I also replaced the receiver with a Pioneer system that offers 140 watts per channel.
So now I'm looking for a two speaker setup to go with it.
I don't need bluetooth, surround sound and special tech crap. Just a pair of good rockin speakers to handle this system AND that won't break the bank.

I know some of you guys gotta have some great sound in your shops/garages.
So what do you recommend?

Thank you,
Tom

I'm big into audio. You don't want little Bose cubes for a shop system. No offense to those that love Bose. I think you want some thing bigger. I have 2 sets of Cerwin Vega speakers on a 150 wattchannel Kenwood in my garage. No way those little Bose are going to be loud enough when you he working in a shop. My garage system will rock the place and sound great doing it. Get some of the biggest speakers you can find for your shop.

Get some old 70's Hi-Fi speakers, the stereo systems were great back then, and you can get great speakers cheap, something like this:

To match the sound of those nowadays you have to pay a lot more.

What are you guys using for an FM antenna ?  My shop is a pole building and I'm having a hell of a time trying to get anything to work. I've tried the antennas that are powered and look like a pyramid and speaker wire that's 10ft long.

How far is your shop from wifi? You could use a wifi range extender/repeater, this is what I'm looking at.

 :iagree:
The only problem with vintage speakers is they will need some work. The foam around the drivers goes bad and has to be replaced. That takes about an hour or so per driver if you can do the work yourself. Also the capacitors in the crossovers should be replaced to get that original sound back. Capacitors go bad or the value will drift over time. Some of the best bargains I have found also needed at least one driver repaired or replaced, but after some repairs they are a great value.

If you can do the work ( its not hard to do ), you can get some great deals on vintage speakers.  :2cents:

I was driving by a guys house last year and he had some stuff sitting outside with for sale signs on it and had a set of studio speakers for $50 in excellent condition. I stopped and looked at them and one of the midrange speakers had a hole in it where one of his kids had poked it with something. I pointed it out and told him I would give him $30 for them since I had to buy another speaker for it and he sold them to me.  :smilielol: They are 16 by 30 by 12 carpeted boxes with 12 inch bass speakers, 5 1/2 midrange and like a 6 inch horn. I have a total of $100 in them after buying a set of new midrange speakers for them, hell the speaker grills alone are worth that much. They will rock your ass right out of the garage when you crank them up!  :2thumbs: I have seen some for sale on Ebay just like them.

I toyed with bookshelf and floor standers as well but ultimately decided I didn't want to lose the bench, wall or floor space so I'm leaving those types for the living room.

Now I am far from an audiophile but I used a pair of these http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-6-1-2-in-ceiling-speakers-pair-white/8235224.p?id=1168043626829&skuId=8235224 in the ceiling of the garage. They sound decent; maybe could use a little more bass but then again they are up 14.5' and just 2 of them are trying to cover 30'x36' so probably not ideal. It works and is inexpensive. In my workshop I did something similar but made up a set of grills and a mounted an old set of 6.5" car speakers. Again works pretty well but nowhere near as nice as a Bose system or the (older) Klipsch systems will get you with floorstanders.

When finishing the garage and room upstairs I had to build a 30' soffit for the plumbing. Definitely wanted to save space by not having standup speakers on the work bench So I pre-wired for flush mount speakers figuring the large box would be a good background for bass. Still need to do the research and find a deal on a set.
