What color is primer on E body underbody?
« on: May 09, 2016 - 12:59:46 AM »
I will soon be stripping the underbody of my 70' Challenger. My understanding is it was completely coated in gray (dark or light?) primer. It then has body color overspray around the perimeter and front wheel wells. Does anyone know the color and any other helpful information on this? This won't be a councils restoration but I want it as close to original in this area as possible.

I believe the factory used different colours (probably depending on different factors). Check to see what yours was before stripping it. This is how my old car was refinished.

RestoRick sells a dip primer kit with the correct colors.   http://www.restorick.com/proddetail.asp?prod=PntUreDipGray

Remember that LA built cars used a black primer while Hamtramck used a dark gray.  Also, I believe ALL colors received red oxide primer after the dip process was complete.  There should be red oxide overspray on the under side as well as body color.

Mine was built at Hamtramac so according to your info should be dark gray primer first then covered with red primer then body color overspray, correct?
I purchased my car from a guy that started the project but did not finish. He had the body soda blasted then did lower rear quarters and used new fenders. The bottom looks like it was cleaned but not stripped. Then it and the door jambs were reprinted Top Babanna. I will check out the bottom on my lift to see what all needs repair. I think the bottom was not blasted so can maybe get some detail info from it. The engine bay and front of the unibody was blasted and painted nicely. Problem is I am changing color. Firewall forward underneath was taken apart blasted and reprinted. Everything behind was not refinished so will be a suprise. Before purchasing I did spend about 30" underneath the car looking for damage or rust and found very little.

Look at the pictures in the link I posted.  It looks like...

1.Dip Prime
2.Red Oxide
3.Lighter primer(sealer? I'm not a painter)
4.Main Body Color

is this true for all LA built e-bodies? my early LA built '70 Barracuda (100322): light grey primer | red oxide | paint.  it had a respray sometime between '70 and '73 when my dad bought it, but the original is under that and I"m looking at a fender now showing that pattern through some sanding
