Found surprise in new intake manifold
« on: May 11, 2016 - 12:43:24 AM »
Had the intake manifold on the bench getting ready to transfer everything over and something black in the corner off an intake runner caught my eye. Looks like and feels like a fine casting sand. These pictures are after I scraped a bunch out with a screwdriver, can't get to all of it. I thought I got a deal on Craigslist, little did I know. RPM air gap, brand new, never installed.  :faint: bummer.

Gee, that would be real good for the engine!
I'd contact the manufacturer!
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Free port and polish!

Hope you found it with relatively low miles after putting on the intake!

If that was a Craigslist score, it could be one of two things.  1. The owner blasted a used intake so it looked new.  2. Chinese fake.

If you didn't buy it new, Edelbrock isn't going to do anything about it.

1. Pretty sure it's new, see added pictures.
2. If Chinese fake they would want to know.
I have sent pictures and told them I bought it from Craigslist. We'll see what happens. I tried cleaning, but it's tough to get in there. Going to wait and see what/if Edelbrock says anything. I know nothing is owed to me.

The openings on the carb flange look modified...opened up.  Could that material be remains of a sand paper roll used to open up the casting?  My secondaries hit the manifold on my air gap.  It might have been opened up for clearance.

Used one of these to ck a manifold once

Hey Thanks, that would be the only way I could feel comfortable that it was all cleaned inside. After seeing this I think everyone should check their intake manifolds for this. How do you know it's clean on the underside of a runner? Without somehow looking in there? Think I'll get one of these regardless. Thanks again!

Just got a email from Edelbrock to call them directly. We'll see what they say.

My experience with Edelbrock is even if you do buy it new with a reciept they will do nothing to help you  , you can take it to a machine shop & have it heated & cleaned as they do with blocks & heads & this may release the sand ,, or have it glass beaded & recleaned

Edelbrock definitely wanted it, sent it out UPS they should have it Fri. Edelbrock said this hasn't happened In about 10 years. Want to check if it's a copy or if something happened in manufacturing or was it slipped out the back door? Edelbrock said they will take care of me and send another, funny thing is they don't have any RPM air gaps right now  :dunno: it's mostly a cruiser with occasional romps, maybe I should ask for a performer?  :dunno:

Is the Performer rpm any good?
I may ask them if after they look at it, if they could clean it up and send it back.
