A little advice needed for my Stock 383
« on: May 12, 2016 - 09:05:10 AM »
So, I have a 1970 challenger with a stock 383 2bbl. Been having problems with driveability. Only mods it has has up till now is a mopar electronic ignition distributor upgrade with a chrome box. I'm running 10 degrees of advance at idle with the vacuume disconnected, 34 degrees total advance. I had the carb rebuilt 2 years ago by a reputable carb specialist and had all but ruled out a carb problem until a rotted out fuel pump diaphram led me to replace the fuel pump and the filter. At the same time I checked the fuel inlet needle and seat on the carb and when I reassembled it and went to start my car it flooded the bowl and made a real mess. The needle valve had slipped into the bowl. I had a carb rebuild kit laying around so I popped the top off and found my accelerator pump looked like crap so I replaced it, the needle valve and seat and the bowl gasket. Re-installed it on the car and it ran a lot better but still not up to the standards that I remember these 383 motors can produce. just doesn't seem to be getting enough fuel. I have an edelbrock DP4B intake and an edelbrock 1406 carb that I bought for a different project an I've decided to install it instead of the stock setup which brings me to my real question. The setup for the 1406 is basically an economy tune, do I need to change the metering /calibration to model the 1405 carb or should I leave it how it is? also does my timing setting seem reasonable or should it be set differently? Thanks in advance.

color of plugs should tell you a lot about what shape your carb is in.
Can always put a new plug in #1 cylinder, then check it after a few runs.
Timing sounds fine.

New dist cap and wires always helps

I tend to agree with above the 1406 is not great but they sure sell a ton of them .
tuning it is never easy they are set way lean from the factory so raising the float level to 3/8 " & just checking float level is a must you will need to use larger jets & or smaller rods whih will require a tuning kit . Depending on the cam you have & the vacuum the engine makes you may need to go to lighter springs under the metering rods , they should aty down at idle is you swing the covers out of the way .

Again already had the carb. I was thinking of setting it up initially like the 1405 manual choke . It has new wires, cap, rotor. plugs look fine, just a little tan. Camshaft is as close to the original 290 hp cam as could be found-not by me. the person I bought it from was going for an as close to original setup as he could get.

I ran an original Carter AVS carb and the DP4B intake back in the day and the car ran great.  Closest Ede carb to the oem Carter is the 1806 AVS style carb.  Yours is AFB based and I've heard both good and bad things about those, but properly tuned should still be OK for your basically stock motor.  I've also heard that the chrome ignition box may not be the best for a street motor, so I'll be curious if anyone else comments on that in this thread.  Good luck on your tuning, 383's are great motors rev like a small block with big block power.

Hmmm, Forgot about hood clearance with my base 70 challenger. The aftermarket  aircleaner I bought is too tall. Got a couple of more things to try. Also can't re-use the stock 2bbl throttle cable bracket. Anybody have a 383 HP throttle linkage bracket laying around(lol)?

It's the throttle and kickdown bracket. Attaches to the intake to hold the kickdown lever and throttle cable
