New from Virginia
« on: May 12, 2016 - 05:39:56 PM »
Hi, I've searched through this forum a few times but never signed up. Last year I bought two (one titled and one for parts) 1970 Challengers to build for my girl. It's her favorite car. When I got it home though I realized it was a bit more of a project than I was prepared to take on. I have a problem. Did the same thing with a 1967 GTO in 2008 and still haven't done a thing to it.
So I search every now and then for one in better shape and think I found it. We're going this weekend to check it out and hopefully it is as good as it looks in pictures.
Slow build and pictures will follow...

I did a quick search but couldn't find a thread on what to look for when purchasing a Challenger. Is there any specific areas I should look? He told me it's not the original motor, but I'm not worried about that. It's originally a slant six car so nothing special or rare. Is there a VIN anywhere else other than the firewall? What would make ya'll turn around and run?

Check the undercarriage, frame rials around the torsion bar and floorboard area's. and pull the trunk mat back and around the back window. also look in the area of the rear quarter window and roof for crack's. good luck! :2cents:

Welcome from CO!  The VIN on the tag in the window should also be stamped on the radiator support, driver side trunk rail (usually under the weather strip seal), the engine block on the passenger side, and on the transmission.

My advice, buy the car in the best possible condition you can afford.  Everything to do with E Bodies is 3x the price of any Cheby, Ferd, or Pontiac.

Here is the car. Let me know what you guys think. I might be going to get it tomorrow but it's 3 hours away so I don't want to waste my time..

Here's the Craigslist ad. I don't know if theres more/different info or pictures.

https://lynchburg.craigslist.org/cto/5545051210.html

The guy told me there is no rust on the floorboards or anywhere else other than what's in the pictures. He said it was stripped to bare metal over 10 years ago and painted but the body guy apparently wasn't that good...
The motor is built but would need a new carb or rebuild the one thats on it.

Welcome! Yeah, agree, that car needs a complete restoration with lots of bodywork, its way cheaper to spend more now and get a rust free one.

Buy this one  , I built it  all done turn key , you would pick up a lot on exhange  you could buy it for around 40K US right now & it will work out cheaper than fixing the one you are looking at !
I have taken apart every nut & bolt  the car is perfect & needs nothing , & it is fast

That is a beautiful car Chryco! I wish I could afford it..

My plan with the car though is to just get it roadworthy for now. Brakes, gas tank, rebuild carb, etc then drive it. I'm not too worried about the dents or rust as long as it's not structural. If the pictures are honest, this seems like a solid car for the east coast.

Well, after driving over 3 hours one direction, looking the car over, much debate, and actually shaking on a deal, dude tells me he doesn't have a title.
