help fixing 'By Plymouth' badge

Hi everyone.
I was hoping for some advice restoring my 'By Plymouth' cuda tail panel badge. Its an original and is in very good condition just needs a tidy up. The text is fine but the background has blemishes and marks/stain which I'm not sure of the best way to get rid of. I tried using brasso polish but it didn't help. I've attached a photo as reference. Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

I taped off the edge of mine then painted the entire face black. Once dry take an exacto knife and scrape the letters clean. Slow and gentle. I would not wait for the paint to fully cure, just dry enough so when the paint flakes off it does not stick to the paint. If you mess up, strip the paint off with brake clean and try again.

As stated above but I would avoid the sharp edge of a blade. Let the paint dry to a "non-tacky" surface then use cotton swabs DAMPENED with paint thinner/lacquer thinner and remove the paint.

I've been thru 2 OEM emblems over the past 25 years.

From what I've observed, they're anodized.
They tend to fade rapidly over time.

After only 2 years my current OEM one is beginning to fade from a black tone to a bronze look.

Thanks for the reply guys. Just so I get this straight, invert the colors? So paint the background black and the text is silver? Opposite to the factory color?

I believe they all started as black with sliver border and letters, then faded to what you have now.

Hmm. My one has black letters which seem to be factory. I've seen photos online with either black background with silver text or silver background with black text.

Where there different emblems for different models/years?

I also just found out that some emblems were a stick on and earlier were fastened in with pins which is the emblem I currently have.

Anyone have any info on this? 😁

I have found two versions of the this emblem, all have the chrome bezel "mount" same as the "sport" on some darts.....I have only seen the stud version. There are many different inserts used in this mount across many of Mopars lines. On 71 cudas I have only seen the Chrome mount black (anodized) field and silver letters. on 72 and 73s I have seen both black field with silver letters and silver field with black letters, 74 i have not seen enough to comment on

I imagine this variation was based on the dash color so that the lettering would stand out prominent.

A little different idea.....:stirpot, painted mine the car color then put black paint in the lettering and wiped it off clean. As I recall we lightly sand blasted it before the yellow paint. If you are looking to keep it original........forget I said anything. Good luck!

Yeah I guess it would be hard to get a definite answer on exactly what came out from Factory especially when so many have been restored and changed up. I think to return the emblem to looking like new it would be easier to do what was mentioned and paint it black and have the silver letters silver (at the moment they are black which looks like its factory applied so have to work out a way to remove it)

Lbs that's an interesting idea but I'm going for the original look so I'll have to paint it black.

Painted mine a gloss back then scratch off the paint and cleared over the emblem.  Looks great!

Your silver emblem with black letters is factory original, just NOT correct for an E Body.
All 71-74's should have black with silver letters.
I think yours is an A body or C Body deal...

My 73 'by Plymouth' was black w/silver letters... black faded to bronze-ish color... mounted with two pot-metal posts and speed nuts on inside of trunk.
