I think this nails the point on the head...
We have been competing and losing against convenience, reliability, and safety for a long time. But nowadays we are also fast losing on the performance end of it. What good is it to be driving a "muscle car" if it is slower than the average new family sedan? Obviously we still have the unique and wow factor on our side. But sometime that is not enough when you are lined up somewhere. (Safe of course. Lol)

Excellent point on performance.  Compare the performance of a brand new V6 Challenger to the performance of a 71 Challenger 340. The new 3.6 V6 has the cubic inches of an old slant six and is putting out nearly 3 times as much horsepower.

You are NEVER going to have the "Fastest Car" unless your funds are unlimited and you can DRIVE IT.

Face it our old cars are "Cooler" than ANY new car, Hands Down. Park your old Challenger nest to a field full of new ones and see which one draws the crowd.

I've had the fastest street car for 20 years in my area.  At least for all the street races I've participated in. But sure
there is always someone faster, but I would not mind losing to a car that has 700+ hp.  Its all the new Mustangs
and Camaros I like to beat, Subaru STi, Vettes, etc, because everyone and their Grandma challenges you, when you drive an E Body!

Being quick in your E body is not that difficult.  3.91 gears, a stall converter, and sticky
rear tires will take care of most of your confrontations.

Took the Challenger out for a cruise yesterday. In traffic I pull up beside some fancy BMW. The young boy in the back seat hangs his head out the window and yells " Dad look at that cool car!!!" it put a big smile on my face. Then I proceeded to show Dad the taillights.

I joined our local modern challenger club, and with this thread in mind I decided to switch things up and bring the old challenger, I was surrounded by 39 modern challengers 4 hell cats, and multiple scat pacs, well after pulling in to the show, all I did was open the hood and the majority of the people flocked past hell cats, scat pacs just to have a gander at the car, so yea classic gets alot more attention for sure

Don't know if it's just because I have a vert, but I've had my car for 5 yrs and have never had anybody pull up beside me to race. I'm happy about that also because my car is more of a lover than a fighter.

Invariably as soon as Challenger comes out there is someone that feels the need to egg me on or impress. Mostly the BMW crowd and now add Audi drivers to the mix...

Yeah, my `cuda is seriously behind in performance - both straight line and cornering compared to newer cars but the `70`s can be copied but never duplicated. Of course if I had another $40-50k to put into my car I could easily outperform even a Hellcat and still have spent less!

Lets put our shoe on the the other foot.

If you had money in 1970's and you were old enough to purchase a new 1970 thru 74  Cuda- Challenger your choice options HEMI, 440 6, etc, you would be
a new generation of muscle car enthusiasts.

The now generation has the money and want the New Challenger, Mustang, Camaro.
 They see our muscle cars but want the newer looks.   more reliable, great sound systems, Siris, GPS,  safer, and the new generation of muscle car enthusiast.
Who knows where the next generation of electric cars enthusiast will be,
Will there be a Mustang or Challenger or Camaro, Vette, in electric.  0 to 100 in 2 seconds..........instant torque.

 

Ya, when our musclecars were new I bet the oldtimers scoffed at kids buying new cars instead of building Hot Rods but at least most of them were modified as soon as they left the showroom.

A relative of ours (younger generation) has one of the new Coyote V-8 2015 Mustangs with M/T.

He dropped 9K on a Supercharger in it.

He's been jaw jacking at me how all this new technology is better etc.
Even egging me on to race him.

So I got tired of it and said O.K. follow me out to empty no cars around road I now of.

I started out well with him, but once his boost kicked in, he left me behind.
