Runnin 205 deg...too hot ???
« on: May 27, 2016 - 04:12:44 AM »
Played a little with my 340 last days....

I blocked the heat crossover ...in my OEM Iron intake...  so far so ...( not good )....  The engine ran way much leaner...because of the missing heat under the carb... So I went up two sizes with the primary jets..from 95 to 97 ( with 1966 rods..)   WOT is fine...  Idle  o.k.  but part time Mixture is too lean  15.5 AFR...  All with a 180 ° F Thermostat....  also  got an awful milage!!!

So I changed the thermostat...put a 195 °F in...   now the AFR is much better...milage also...    but now the eninge is running at 200-210 °F  depending
of the load...   will this be a problem ?

My radiator is a 2 core copper brass unit  ( MOPAR OEM) the tube look good... Anti freeze Mix ist about 40 / 60   Antifreeze /Water .... Iginition is 15 /35 +10 deg. Vacuum..

Any Ideas ??

Thank you Juergen

45 degree total timing may be too much for a 195 deg thermostat. Try disconnecting (and plug) the vacuum advance hose and go for a test drive.
The temp gauge and/or 195 deg thermostat my have some +- error. Check the actual temp with an IR temp gun or equal to verify.

...I plugged the Vacuum canister....  same story..

The instruments are from AUTO METER...all new stuff... I also checked the Temp. with an Infrared Gauge....   at the Thermostat neck...  i have around 200 deg...

If your temp reading are indeed accurate, your temps are by no means too hot

too hot for me. water in heads may be 15 degrees hotter.  With iron heads,
increases chance of detonation.  And if get stuck in traffic, more chance of
overheating. May not be able to drive on a really hot day.

thank you guys for your opinions....

tomorrow I will pull the intake again...open the crossover...and go back to the 180 deg Thermostat.... seems more secure indeed!

 :iagree:

From everything I've read, 210 is not too hot.  The factory used 195 thermostats for a reason.  While it's true that a cooler engine makes more power, it's actually a very minimal gain.  The colder an engine is, the faster it will wear.(friction goes down as temp goes up)  I'd keep the 195 stat in there. :2cents:  The thermostat limits the lowest possible temp the engine can see.  It should have nothing to do with overheating.  If your car overheats with a 195 stat, it should overheat with a 180 stat as well.  The stat only sets the "lowest" temp.

X2 on This/\
Even though you stated your radiator looks good there could still be plugged lines in it. How old is it? I would look into making sure it is flowing properly.

my radiator looks good... how old ?? good question.... I will flush the whole system... with a cleaner...   just in case....
as I just wrote.... first of all I will pull the intake....   open the croosover....and make a test drive.... to see where the temperature will go to....

I have the tranny cooling lines hooked up in the radiator.... before the lines go to a B&M Cooler... - but this shouldnd be an issue...

I bypassed the radiator with my tranny fluid lines, and went straight to the cooler.
Figured it would make the radiator hotter, and the tranny hotter. Heat is what kills
a tranny.

Not sure how yours are routed but I would have the lines going to the B&M cooler first, then into the rad ? I have a separate cooler for the transmission , doesn't go into the rad at all.  :dunno:

You can see it mounted ahead of the electric fan....

The return temp from my tranny cooler to the tranny is about 180 if I recall.  If
I put the line through the rad also, would make the tranny hotter.

If your temp reading are indeed accurate, your temps are by no means too hot

:iagree:  The coolant output will generally be 5-8 degrees over the thermostat opening temp. If you can maintain this temp and have no ill effects as in pinging etc, you will have better fuel vaporization and MPG.  :2cents:

pulled the intake today...and  "unblocked " the crossover....   then I stripped  theraed on the first bolt on Drivers side   ( GRRRR )  but.... now I have a
NOT ORIGINAL METRIC M 10 Screw /Bolt ...in that position :)

Next step will be the radiator... mine is a 2 row Copper brass.... 22 inches wide....   so I think a 3 row  will be the better way to go..or a 2 Row Aluminium
radiator......

@ 734406pk   I think my engine is pinging  with that amount of heat....  don´t know why....  the 68 Mustang from a friend ....runs 202-205 deg  with no issues....    will see...

@ chryco Psycho     you are right...for my intention  street usable car... it is better with a open crossover
