:iagree: Put the engine back with crossover open and 180 deg t-stat. It doesn't like the 205 degrees for some reason.

if running 205 at 70 degrees, then what would you be running at if
outside temp was 90 degrees. 225? Then what will eng temp do if you
are at 90 degrees outside, but stuck in traffic, at idle for 5 minutes. At idle you have very
slow coolant flow. The hotter you get you might start developing some vapor pockets/hot spots in your heads, which normally
I've read have about 15 degrees hotter watar than the water going to your radiator. A weak coolant pump can
give poor flow in the heads. Aluminum heads like/don't mind hot, because they transfer heat very well, but iron heads don't transfer heat as well,
and that can contribute to detonation. Bottom line, give yourself as much margin possible, without
negativly affecting engine performance. An Aluminum radiator is a great way to get that margin.

:iagree: That's probably why the engine is pinging, combustion chamber temp is too high for this engine build.

.... so I flushed my cooling system.today...   after I put everything together again...   strange thing ..  I can´t see a good flow of coolant when I take the radiator cap off....   so I think the waterpump is  " close to the end "..  The radiator is a 2 row.. and when I remove the cap... the tubes look o.k.

I think I will buy a new pump...  and then ...I ll see whats happens.

Greetings Juergen

Btw...  the temperature never went above 188 /190 deg while idling for 20 minutes or so...    with the 180 ° F thermostat...

pulled the intake today...and  "unblocked " the crossover....   then I stripped  theraed on the first bolt on Drivers side   ( GRRRR )  but.... now I have a
NOT ORIGINAL METRIC M 10 Screw /Bolt ...in that position :)

Next step will be the radiator... mine is a 2 row Copper brass.... 22 inches wide....   so I think a 3 row  will be the better way to go..or a 2 Row Aluminium
radiator......

@ 734406pk   I think my engine is pinging  with that amount of heat....  don´t know why....  the 68 Mustang from a friend ....runs 202-205 deg  with no issues....    will see...

@ chryco Psycho     you are right...for my intention  street usable car... it is better with a open crossover

2 row aluminum beats a 4 row copper-brass

Took the radiator to a radiator shop.....   from the outside...a nice good lookin "GUY"... but....  inside....  ugly...  lot of Calcium....
now the radiator will get a  3 row net with more tubes....  so I can stay with the STOCK LOOK...while having 30% more effficeny... ( over a new 2 row radiator...   the milodon high flow water pump and thermostat are on the way too....

Next Friday...everthing will be installed....

Greetings Juergen

@ cudabob....  the aluminium radiator is fine..I know ....  but I am living in Germany... :(   and we don´t have good speed shop here...  the only source is summit ( for examlpe )  ..and shipping a radiator via AIR  is quite expensive....

You should be happy with the three row copper radiator. Best of luck with your repair!

Thank you guys for the good wishes !!

Today I pulled the timing cover...and the Waterpump....what I found is a 6 blade WP  ...looks bone stock....   and sadly  I have some slight marks..were the Impeller contacted the Timing cover ...  is this a  "NO GO " to  reinstall the old timing cover ?  Of course I will check  the clearance with the new Waterpump..to make sure that there will be no contact  from the impeller ...with the back of the timing cover..

would think timing cover is fine, as long as no hole, and no contact
with new pump. The Milodon pump I have works great.

Scratch like that happen when the wp bearing goes out. As in waaay out. If there was no or only minimal wobble on the pump you are removing the damage is most likely from another failed pump. Point being, the damage has probably been there for awhile.
