electric fan not cooling at highway speeds

 I tried a flexalite shrouded fan last year and it ran hot down the highway wich I read is a common problem.  So I read that the HHR fan is the sh!t.  So I get one...... Same thing, blocks air at highway speeds.  Is there anyone that has expierienced the same problem and found the solution other than going to a mechanical ( wich is my next step I think )

 ;D I have the opposite problem ,ok when at hwy speeds, its sitting in traffic that becomes an issue.

Yeah, that's the way it should be. My last fan I even built some temporary air dams over the rad to direct the air, pulled my seal off my shaker and no such luck.  I have a clutch fan but need to find a shroud, it doesn't keep up in traffic, I don't know if it will with a shroud either

How hot is it getting?

My 318 would always get to 195-200* on the highway during the Summer. 180* stat, Al radiator, HHR fan w/flaps cut in it.

That temp is just fine however..

It runs 195 steady with clutch fan, 200 with HHR. This is on a very cool day, 15 Celsius.  The fan shouldn't event be spinning on the Hwy..
 So the flaps didn't solve your issue? I was thinking of trying that

If running hot while cruising, many times its something other than the cooling fan.  Because while cruising
you have a lot of cool air being forced into radiator, and engine is not putting out a lot of heat at a cruise rpm.
Other prolbems could be bad water pump, clogged radiator, low on codolant (create a closes system with expansion tank) collapsed hose, timing off, engine compartment too well sealed, so air can't get past the radiator quickly, etc, etc
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

No, they did not solve my issue. I was never really able to fix the issue, but it never developed into a major problem either.

Well crap.  I think I've invested enough time and money into electric fans. I really want one but I think I'll just get a shroud for the ol faithful mechanical

On another note, I have two temp gauges, one for my gauge in the dash and one for my fuel injection system. The one for my gauge on the passenger side of intake and the one for the injection is right beside the thermostat. My gauge reads 15 degrees cooler than my injection, I'm assuming the reason is its on the return to rad side and the other one is in from rad :dunno:.  I'm assuming the lower temp would be the accurate one ?

I would add the flaps to your shroud.  If more air is blowing thru radiator than shroud allows this will help. Just make sure they close easily when fan is running to get the most pull at low speeds
Removing the warning labels one at a time.
Nature will take care of the rest.

If your fan is easy enough to access, I'd drive without it completely and ensure that would solve the problem before hacking it up.

name brand, mechanical gauge?

Did I interpret that the the fi is reading 220 when the gauge is reading 205?

I run dual electric fans and am noticing the same issue. I also have a 4 core aluminum radiator. My understanding is that over 40 mph the fans are useless anyway, so the fans may not be your problem. Like Cudabob said, the air may not be able to get out of the engine compartment. May be timing, or water pump?

Both of our rides have the stock fan clutch, shroud, no headers. upgrade rad to 3 core.

Both run at 195 'f.
After purchasing GCpe.
Had to replace water pump on GC cheap china aluminum replaced it with cast iron.
replaced fan clutch, fan belts and flush rad......new coolant.

If it won't stay cool at highway speeds its not the fans. You have a flow problem somewhere, either the radiator is plugged, or the pump is going out or is inadequate. Maybe the lower hose is collapsing under load? Bottom line is, it's not likely to be the fans that are your problem, they shouldn't even run at highways speeds. And if they are running at highway speeds that could point to another problem, like the fan switch/controller. Which also begs the question, what is your controller set at to run the fans? Because if the controller is set to keep the engine at 200* (which isn't that hot, BTW) it will run 200* all the time, and it will run the same on a cool day and a hot day.

I use a 1995- 2000 V6 ford contour, two speed, dual electric fan set up on a 26" Champion 3 core radiator. This is in my Duster, but it doesn't matter much. The 340 that fan set up is cooling is .060" over and is putting out 400+ hp. The fans NEVER run if I'm moving faster than 15mph or so, and that's true on 110* F days. Make sure you're also running a good fan controller, the electric fans can only be as good as their controller. I run a Dakota Digital 2750 controller. Works awesome, lets you program the on and off temperatures for both the low and high speeds on the fans, plus allows for things like running the fans after the car is shut down to prevent heat soak when you shut down. I also run a high volume water pump. Whole thing almost works too well, at freeway speeds in the winter I stay at whatever temperature the thermostat is, currently a 180*. In the summer the fans still cycle on and off, they never run continuously. I've never even had the fans kick up to high speed, so, based on my fan controller settings that means the engine has never been over 205*. And I've driven the car more than a few times in 110* F weather, it's my daily driver and it gets hot around Sacramento in the summer. Heck I didn't even open up the radiator support, it's for a 22" radiator.

Hey the 318 in my Challenger runs at 195* all day long too, it just has a plain mechanical fan, not even a fan clutch. Stock 2 core radiator, stock water pump. It's because it's basically a stock engine and doesn't make much in the way of horsepower, with a 4 barrel and headers maybe 250 tops. More horsepower = more cooling needed. Pretty simple. If you've got a stock engine, the stock cooling system should be more than adequate. 400+ hp .060" 340 small block, you'd better improve the cooling. Horsepower is heat.

Personally, I love reading about guys with stock spec engines. Means my car is faster, and a hell of a lot more fun.  :grinyes: :burnout:
