Alternatives to AMD fenders?
« on: May 31, 2016 - 02:10:13 PM »
I have a Sherman passenger fender, it's a long story how I ended up with it, but that's what I have. For the drivers side, I ordered an AMD and they are telling me 2+mo back order.

I am talking to the body shop Tuesday to look at timing for dropping the car off, and two months may be okay, if it isn't, are any other fenders better than others?

The Sherman seems ok, but I haven't taken a shot on alignment.

I would talk with Dave from Roseville as I have a car that AMD does not make fenders for. It is a 71 Gran Coupe, thus no gills. I was talking with Dave about this and he recommended Good Mark as their quality is quite good. I am not at that point yet, but that is my current plan, unless I find an original pair of 71's.

I can't imagine there are many dies that large out there supporting such low volumes on big presses.

I received Sherman parts with Goodmark numbers on them.

Wonder if Sherman parts are second tier parts from first tier rejects.
Happens all the time in the supply chain.

Just posting a thought...
Removing the warning labels one at a time.
Nature will take care of the rest.

Potentially, stamping is a pretty consistent process from my experience however.

And if they are different thickness material, then that would solve that one.

I would just pay up on original fenders if you could.  I really don't know how well the quality control is over there, my guess not good. For example When I bought my shaker in 2009 , the quality looked decent. I was at a show last year and saw the same hood and I can tell the die is worn out , the bends where not sharp and even drags in holes and blemishes in the steel.

there are only 3 stamping companies in Taiwan. They do ALL of the current metal parts that we see. Lots of speculation of who gets what and the QC that comes with each product.

Tried 2 AMD driver's side fenders and neither fit correctly.  The first one didn't fit - AMD said they would replace it when they got a shipment of new fenders - after months of waiting the 2nd fender showed up and it was worse than the first.  Trying a Goodmark fender next to see if it is any better.  I will post the results.
BTW - used other AMD body panels with no significant issues.

Very interested in hearing your results. In which way did they "not fit"?

I have a left front 1971 fender (no gills). I am willing to trade for a 1970 right front.
Of course, you could always weld patch panels over the gill openings.
What the color combo on the GC?

Car is a triple black and will be going back as it came. I am not a big fan of black, but dislike color changes even worse, LOL.

PM sent on fender.

Get AMD or originals.    Sell the Sherman.  I have a new damaged AMD you can have cheap.   They always show up damaged.   Any repop metal is thinner gauge.  Fit up is weird, You gotta tweak em to get the gaps right with the lower bolts.  What's wrong with your old ones?

when the first production Goodmark quarters came out, I bought a Left rear quarter.

Disappointed on what it took to massage it/fabricate it to fit properly to the body.
