camshaft retainer bolt.... w/o oil hole ??
« on: June 02, 2016 - 08:50:17 AM »
Sitting in my garage..
and I don't know how to go on now.. pulled the Timing chain..
and wanted to reinstall everything.  BUT the upper rh bolt has no
hole to allow dripping oil on the timing chain.
So...I think I have to drill a hole in the bolt. But  I don't know the size...
Can someone tell mehr the correct size please ?

Thank You
Juergen

P.s. Not even on of the four bolts had a hole

They didn't all come with the holes...don't know why...
1/8" - 3/16" will do...

If you have a lathe it's easy, otherwise good luck.... And personally I'd tend to stay on the small side, oil at 40+ PSI will be pouring out that hole, it's a big internal leak... And how much oil does the chain really need?

drilled a 2 mm hole..( lees than 1/8    close to 1 /12 of an inch....    I used a accu driller   ....was an easy job..

will see if it works....      The new chain is now very tight.... sould be because of the tensenor that I installed ( from the 3.9 V6 )...   the old chain had around 1/2 inch  play...  6 deg on the balancer...

...  fired the Engine today...after I installed the "New " radiator....  so far so good.... temperature is fixed at 180 °F....  Oil pressure...fine....

BUT   there is a sound..that wasn´t there before...   sounds like a  "SHRAP SHRAP "...  comin from the front of the engine....

Could it be the chain tensioner ???  When I installend the new timing chain...  everything was real tight...    I turned the engine over a couple of time...nothing binding..everthing smooth....    Perhaps the chain is too tight  ???  or the tensioner is too strong ??    I am afraid...that the camshaft bearing could spun...  or something else could happen....

Perhaps someone  installed the tensioner also...and can tell me I he made the same experience...

Thank you

I've read where those tensioners don't last very long.  The chain eats up the plastic in a hurry.  No experience with them personally.

Are there supposed to have plugs for the two holes above the camshaft? I asked because mine does not have them but many pictures and books show they are plugged with caps.

Those holes are open to the valley area...no plugs.

FWIW, I just put mine back together yesterday. ..
The engine is a 1974 318.....NO oil hole in the bolts......been running fine like that since 1974.....

... the fuel pump lever.... was the "bad boy "...  the lever slightly touched the timing chain..     the result was this scrapping sound.
Anyway...I  modifyed the fuel pump lever just a little....  welded a piece of steel into the lever  ( as an reforcement )  and the I filed down the lever about
2mm   now everything works fine !!

here are some pics....
on the first you can see the little scratch marks...   on the second /third pic you can see the modifyed lever

?? for a while ?   why ?   The chain  will strech perhaps... but the distance to the fuel pump lever...should not be affected...   right ?

Do you have a new timing chain cover, by chance? Might be the holes for the fuel pump mount are offset toward the engine a bit, bringing the pump arm into contact with the chain? Or, the plate that is used for the tensioner is thicker than original plate, and doesn't let cam sit back against rear plug when gear is on cam. Did you have new cam plug installed on back of engine, and set too deep when installed (holds cam forward slightly, causing it to rub).

Ideal world, things should not change with modification you did and affect pump arm rubbing...

If cam is in wrong position, it will have lifters offset on cam lobes as well...
