problems with Comp Cams hydraulic roller lifters on 440
« on: June 02, 2016 - 09:02:53 PM »
after the first run and setting the ignition timing.  turned off and sterted up the engine 3-4 times , on 5 time start -
engine shakes and strange noise, took off valve cover and found that several pushrods are not tight enough (you can rotate them with your fingers ) , again adjusted all valves, not to 4/8 turn  like the first time, now its at 5/8 ... then once started the engine - all good

2 months after, I decided last night to drive the car to assembly of the exhaust system(hard to work with this monster in side garage on open headers)))) , it's only 2 miles from the garage , I burned one ignition wire 100feet away from of their gates (, accel say that their wire hold 800 degrees - a lie ) but the fact that after the replacement of the wires turned out that this is not a misfire ! again took off   valves cover now !!!3!!! pushrods pop out!! i think(i did not take them out - but i will next week) but it looks like Upon further examination, we will find  several (meaning about 6 to 8) of the lifter plungers had "hung up" and were about 3/16" down inside the bore of the lifter casting stuck in the down position

I found a couple of guys with problems same WTF on web -but no answer to the problem!???

440 r/t engine mods are:
Performer RPM heades
Oil Pump - High-Volume
ROSS Pistons, Forged
COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Hydraulic Roller 280/288, Lift .541/.537
PRW Roller Rocker 1.5
all ARP
1 7/8 headers Full-length
all balanced
I run FAST EZ-EFI
and some other stuff - good wires, ignition .......

HELP!!!!! what to do???? :banghead:

That sucks! I would get a different brand of hydraulic roller lifters at this point.

stupid question : what if i will tighten these to the end - they will not work as solidrollers?? or with my camshaft i can use only Hydraulic Roller??

if you tighten them to the bottom the vales will be open , even solid cams have .016 - .028 lash but this might work as long as there is some play / lash ,
 yup Comp stuff is overrated

High risk of piston to valve contact and engine damage. Not worth the risk IMHO.

I do not agree the valve will only move the distance the lifter will move it so as long as the valve closes it will not hit the piston .
you could have a number of issues thugh  the spring pressure could be too light allowing the valve train to go loose & the rods fall out or the lifter could be collapsing under excessive spring pressure  or it could just be bad lifters . bottoming the lifter & backing it off .030 will prevent the lifter from causing porblems but if the spring pressure is too low it may not solve the issue

My concern with running the engine with hydraulic lifter bottomed out creates at least 2 problems. First, the oil passage in the adjusting screw (if there is one) in the rocker arm will be blocked off so no lube to the cup and ball area and second, the valve train geometry will be off side-loading the valves in operation, possibly bending a valve stem enough to bind in the guide. Frustrating for sure! I would recommend replacing the lifters asap.  :2cents:

You may have the same problem I'm facing.

I have an excessively loud valvetrain and if resetting the lash on each and every valve by each cylinder doesn't quiet it down then I will go ahead and replace with hughes lifters.

I pulled my valve covers not long ago and could spin each and every pushrod on the passenger side and even with the hydraulic play in there I shouldn't be able to spin each one by hand.

The factory Eddy springs are probably fine but may not meet the needs of a roller profile cam.

The springs are close
Rrecommended seat pressure is 155 lbs to your 140 lbs
Open pressure is 377 lbs@ 1.28 to your 317 @ 1.38 so it would seem the springs are too light but @ .600 lift they may be close  enough in pressure & the actual required pressure varies a little too as those spring would be recommended for numerous cams

I have these springs and so it may still be the lifters. Unfortunately I have read many reports of them failing. Yes all of this after I bought them and even talked with Comp and they said they no longer had that problem. hmmm

Spoke with Comp today and they recommended setting lash again but at 3/4 turn and not the 1/2 turn which is stated in the instructions.

We shall see what happens but I did ask him if his lifters failed were they going to replace my motor - crickets go figure.
