Bent Sway Bar Bracket
« on: June 03, 2016 - 02:45:00 PM »
1970 Challenger RT 383. Has anyone seen a sway bar bracket bent to the front like this one? Everything else looks okay and the front end hasn't been in a wreck since at least 1980 (year I bought it). Not sure that with a new sway bar bracket everything will go back in place? You can also see that the sway bar link is close to touching the strut. Is it easy to tell if the sway bar is bent? Any thing else to worry about?

The K-member bracket is just pulling the end link forward.  The end link bolt could be bent as well.  My guess is that a new bracket and new end links will take care of it.  You could remove the bar and post a picture of it.  We should be able to tell if it's bent.  My guess is it's OK.

My guess is someone towed or tied it down using the sway bar. Is it just the one side that is bent?

Thanks for the comments! The other side is not distorted at all.

Common damage. I think you could straighten it by simply prying it with a long screwdriver using the bolt as an anchor point. The brackets are barely thicker than sheetmetal.

As all have noted probably caused from being pulled when  car was strapped down.
I had a flat one from being use as a lift point by a jack (@ss) when having tires installed.
Disconnect, disassemble and straighten or relpace.

Also... to save future remarks be sure to install all your mounting bolts in their "proper" orientation.  :stirpot:

Removing the warning labels one at a time.
Nature will take care of the rest.
