Oil Pan Installation Question
« on: June 07, 2016 - 04:15:48 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm about to install the oil pan on my 340 and I was watching a Youtube video and this guy slathered RTV on all 4 gaskets both sides.

I thought it was just supposed to go in only the 4 corners below and above the gasket?

I thought is was a rule not to ever use RTV on rubber gaskets since they tend to slide over time?

What are your thoughts?  Thanks

Dave

depends on the gasket you are using most only require the ends of the rubber seals & corners , is there instructions with the gasket?

Avoid RTV being spread all over the gaskets... NO gasket mfgr will ever instruct that to be done. Usage of RTV is to be as a filler of gap... such as the 4-corner intersections.. just a small dab.

RTV should NEVER be spread across rubber gaskets (.... it will act as a lubricant and cause the gasket to slide out of position upon clamping (grease helps better to allow it slide out of position... so DON'T use any chemical on rubber gaskets).   The gasket does the sealing... not the chemical.  You can use a mild contact adhesive to hold the side rail gaskets to the pan or block (best to the pan as it'll be easier to clean upon future removal).

I was a past Fel-Pro gasket aftermarket engineer... I wrote all the gasket set's instructions.

Who's gasket set are you using?

Thanks Mitch for the great detailed information.  I'm using a Milodon crushproof oil pan gasket set # 40600 with a new Milodon 7 QT oil Pan # 30936.

Any thoughts?

I'm unaware of from who/supplier Milodon is getting their gaskets from... I recall many years ago they were buying from Fel-Pro.   Fel-Pro offers a rubber-coated fiber gasket set... this is more durable from being "crushed" as well as far more resistant to years of becoming saturated.    "Crush-proof" should imply that the gasket has metal (or sometimes plastic) internal grommets at the bolt holes which will limit the gasket compression/squeeze.... do the side-rail gaskets have internal solid stoppers?

For chemicals, just use a small dab of RTV at the 4-intersecting corners;  the rubber ends attached into the pan via pull-through tabs; the side rails long gaskets are best installed dry, but pending how you're installing them (on an engine stand, or below the frame, you could simply use some quick-drying contact cement to hold them in position.  Remember... the gaskets do the sealing, not the chemicals.
