Battery leaking??
« on: June 12, 2016 - 04:12:47 PM »
First drive of the year and i have these grey spots spattered all over my inner fender and a huge sploge of it under the battery.

The battery had fluid all over it...but I also had a power steering leak.

Did my battery leak fluid everywhere??

That's typical leaking battery damage.  Lucky you caught it when you did.  It's not uncommon for an older battery to leak and they can do enormous damage.

Well crap!!  Battery is only 3 years old. What would cause it to leak like that???

Well got them to replace the battery even though it tested fine.  They said it was clearly leaking.

They seem to think it got to hot and leaked.

Any thoughts on what would cause it to over heat?  Could a bad voltage reg be the cause??

Unless there is a crack in the case, overcharging can cause acid battery to leak.  Or if you keep a charger on the battery during storage, that can overcharge the battery, depending on the type of charger.  Best to use a battery maintainer for storage use.  If caps are removable, check the level.

Jas, stick a voltage meter across the terminals when it's running and check the voltage. At fast idle, it should be approx. 14.2V. If the regulator is pooched, it may overcharge and cook the battery. How's the steering issue coming along? Ian

Don't forget to neutralize the acid with a good washing of the inner fender with baking soda and water.

X2 on this or it will keep eating.
Removing the warning labels one at a time.
Nature will take care of the rest.

Good move!   :2thumbs:

Heavy aren't they?
That's what happens when you have a battery with 100% pure lead.

Hmm. I did fire it up and check...multi meter says 14 ish volts across the battery.

I will keep an eye on volt gauge next time I have the car out.
