Need help with steering column rebuild
« on: June 12, 2016 - 04:54:28 PM »
Hubby and I just completed rebuild on our steering column for our '71 Cuda but we have one question before we can install it.

Info:

We have power steering shaft but we are actually going to have manual steering.

We bought an adapter from Firm Feel to make the connection to steering box.

During our rebuild we read in the FSM that the steering column should have an O-Ring and O-Ring Retainer which we do not have. See pics:

The FSM instructions for rebuilding the column are a little muddled since they're mainly for column-shift cars but ours is a floor shift automatic. There are just a few differences between the two, i.e. shift tube etc. We were able to sort that out okay.

My question is: Do we need this O-Ring and Retainer or is this for column shift only? If we do need one, where can we find them? We can't seem to find anything online. Please help! Thanks!

That O ring and retainer are part of every Mopar steering column....Should be a real easy part to find used :2cents:

I can't find anything like what's pictured in the FSM. I found the o ring but not the retainer!

The O-Ring retaining plate for a 70 BJ is part number 2950814 and the number for a 71 BJ is 3575015 You should purchase the correct o-ring retaining plate to match what ever year floor plate you are using or it won't fit and seal correctly as the 70 and 71 up plates are different as well

Well...if a girl doesn't know what a BJ is..... :naughty: ...she must be married :roflsmiley:

In the Mopar world BJ means "B" Barracuda "J" Challenger......another way of describing E Bodies.
