Painting a car after epoxy with or without panels
« on: June 14, 2016 - 10:17:04 PM »
Wondering if everyone has their cars painted in pieces then assembles door hood trunk etc.  I am getting my car blasted and epoxied and wanted to assemble it and get all the gaps set before going for final body and paint.  When I took the car apart it looks like this is how it was done originally as there are areas behind hinges in bare steel Now they would atleast be epoxied. Just not sure about getting good paint coverage in the jambs and around hinges.

It's totally your call and whatever you can live with in terms of a paint job. Most people who go to the length of tearing their car down, usually paint the inner panels and undersides of the doors, deck and hood before painting the rest of the car. Your car, your call. Personally, I'm in the reassembly stage and have painted everything so far and will trim the doors, deck and hood before painting the car overall; but then, that's just my  :2cents:

I'm at that point also, car is blasted and has epoxy. I will probably paint everything except the outside surfaces, reassemble the car, then paint. My problem now is I can not decide on a color :)

If the car has heavy metallic such as EF8 you run a risk of the metallic being uneven if you paint the individual panels and then assemble.  For solid colors there is no problem.

+1 on the metallic vs solid colors

:2cents: I assembled mine prior to paint to check fit (and no chance nicking fresh paint) and drilled guide holes when everything lined up to make post-assembly alignment easier. I had a solid color so I opted to paint in pieces. Carefully re-assembled and the guide holes made alignment a breeze. Filled the holes with sealer and put a dab of paint to hide it.
