A-833 problems down shifting to 2nd and 1st gear
« on: June 15, 2016 - 02:34:32 PM »
I have problem down shifting to 1st and 2nd gear if the car is in motion and has 2000rpm or more. I can get it to 2nd from 3rd, but it's hard (have to use force).
I have to go really slow if I want to get in to 1st. If now it just makes a lot of noise. And still will not get into gear. I have no trouble up shifting at high rpm 6000-6500. Then it works fine. I's only when down shifting. And only 1st and 2nd gear. What could be the problem?

I have a Borg & Beck pressure plate with clutch pedal overcenter spring. Lakewook bellhousing. The A-833 is a 73 b-body version that has had the tailshaft taken from a o/d case to fit a e-body. I had this problem since the the A-833 was rebuilt.

Could it be the clutch is still not totally free? Or is it somting to with the shift fork?

could be either the syncros not gripping , wrong oil  or cluth not fully releasing

The oil I use is Valvoline 80W90 GL4 miniral. I'm going to switch to Red Line MT90. How do i check the syncros? I'll check the clutch rod to.

Could be an adjustment in the shifter linkages/rods.

Did it just start happening over night ?

I'm leaning towards syncros  :2cents:

I had a very similar issue that started after a fresh rebuild and corrected all of it by putting a new shifter mechanism, the old one was warn out. The old mechanism was using new rods and still did not make a difference.

If it's rebuilt already...then I agree, it's in the rods  :2cents:

I had a similar problem with mine when I first bought it from Brewers, but when's shifting from 4th to 3rd. Called Brewers and they recommended re-checking linkage in the shifter gates, after doing that and still having the problem, they said to give it a year to see if it would get better and indeed it has. No probs now :burnout:

Installed a new hurst shifter mechanism and pistol grip. I got a hole lot better shifting. But still have problem down shifting in speed for acceleration. No problem when the car is barly moving. Could it be the synchronizer sleeve and the fork? As these were not replaced when the transitions was rebuilt. And they were a little bit warn.

Drain the 85/90 gear oil and refill with ATF-4. Your tranny will work a lot better. At least that has been my experience. Had the gear oil in there from 1990 to about 1992 and had the same issue you are having. Changed to ATF-4  and the downshifting issue has never resurfaced. Still running ATF-4.

But isn't ATF-4 for automatic cars? And not for manual trans?
I see that Brewer's Performance sayes that chrysler recommends 85W-90 gear oil, GL4. But I got Valvoline 80W90 http://www.valvolineeurope.com/uploadedFiles/5410.pdf.

I have MT-90 RED LINE 75W90 GL-4  that I was thinking of puting in manual trans. But I don't want to waist the oil, if it doesn't help. As I had to import the oil from the US myself as they don't sell it here in Norway.

The gear oil verses trans fluid debate has been going on for years and years.  Some say the ATF works great, others say it isn't thick enough to properly lube the internals.  I think it goes back to the fact that Chrysler listed BOTH as the proper lube depending on what year FSM you read.
