Maybe the bellhousing  is out of alignment? Indicate it?

OR, learn to rev match/double clutch it upon deceleration.  :2cents:

Is that where it comes from? Didn't know that. Back in the 80's, early 90's, everybody I knew with a 833 used ATF4. Using 75/90 or whatever it was worked ok if you shifted slow, like a leisurely drive to work. But if you wanted to get on it, upshift/downshift aggressively, the thicker oil didn't play well with the syncros. Change out to atf4 and slam the gears as hard as you want.

Heh the guy that rebuilt my A833 said to use ATF explicitly and I have to say after driving Cudas with gear oil and ATF  - I prefer the ATF.

Wouldn't draining out the 80/90 and adding ATF mix together what's left and make a goo?
Kinda like what water and oil does in an engine?

Thanks, good to know.

I'm thinking on changing mine out and going to ATF or what CP suggested.

changed the oil from 80W90 GL-4 to MT-90 RED LINE 75W90 GL-4. This did improve the shifting alot. But still some gear noise and hard to down shift 1st and 2nd in speed. 3rd no problem.
Could the problem be the synchronizer slider sleeve (the outer drum) been to worn in the sleeve were the fork pushes it back and forth (1st/2nd gear)? As I was told this was a littel loose by the guy rebuilding the 4-speed.

I had experienced the exact same before my 833 rebuild.  The rebuild included a new input shaft.  Now it will go into 1st while moving.  I is really much better to drive now.  My rebuilder showed me the peaks of the teeth on the input shaft gear were worn out and not sharp.
