Aussie ‘E-Max’ style T/A Challenger
« on: June 16, 2016 - 08:59:28 PM »
This build is almost a ‘retrospective’ given I have been meaning to post this for about 18 months, over which time my build has progressed, but not hugely.

I want to share my project with you all in the hope that someone will get a kick out of it, hopefully some ideas from it, I’ll get some inspiration from you - and sometimes, someone might stop me from doing something completely stupid!

I have no fabrication skills, don’t know the first thing about body & paint but I’m OK with general mechanics. I got inspired by following Toxic Wolf’s A66 Challenger with his & Roadman’s handy work, as well as other projects I’ve been following. I have learned most of what I know about my car from trial and error, but mostly from these forums and all the excellent contributions from the members.  And Brad (brads 70) seems to have a diagram & measurements for anything he has made - or is planning to make!!

This is my fourth Mopar I imported from the USA. I’ve had 2 1970 Challenger’s one a 318 and the other a 383 SE, 1 Duster 440. All I sold and made a little money on to help finance my ultimate desire – 1970 Sublime 4 speed Challenger T/A.

I was looking for a real T/A but at the time couldn’t find anything decent under $75K ($100K Aussie, plus GST, plus luxury car tax etc.) which was way out of my budget - Strike 1. Then I thought well if it’s worth that much, I won’t drive it and leave it anywhere unattended - Strike 2. If it is an original car, I wouldn’t feel right modifying it, it has to be sublime and 340 cubes just won’t cut it - Strike 3.

Now for the car! I saw this ad in Cars On Line. It was a tribute car and looked very convincing with 6 pack etc. & very straight. The price was right (for what I knew at the time) so I got an ‘independent’ inspection carried out. It gave the car the most glowing review I’ve ever read (and I think the vendor gave him something too) and upon reading it the deal was done. I wanted a car that needed zero body work and I would just trick up the engine and suspension to get my E-Max style Challenger.

Long story short, I picked it up from the port in Melbourne and it ran like a dog, black smoke, backfiring, popping, handled like a boat but the brakes worked – luckily. I got home, opened the trunk and WTF ‘its copper’ colour inside my new red car!!! I looked in the wheel arches – more copper. It was never mentioned by the vendor. How did that get missed in the inspection? I looked back through the photos I’d been sent and the trunk photos were washed out due to the angle they were taken in really bright sunlight - you can’t pick the colour – it looks kinda red. I would have offered much less for the car if I had known this fact, or what I’d find later….

Then I started finding rust….

Here are a couple of pics (the car, the progress, the goal) and I will post a lot more soon…

I peeled back the vinyl trunk mat and found the dreaded black goop. No mention of this in the report! After scraping it back, I started finding crappy fiberglass and tin patches covered in this crap. After hours with the scraper and wire wheel it became obvious a new trunk floor would be required. There goes the suspension & engine/gearbox only upgrade… Oh and did I mention the True Tac rear was actually an open diff?

Out with the old - in with the new. Installing a Hotckis TVS system, QA1 K member & lower control arms, Wilwood disks, Magnum 2" drop spindles. Wish I had a set of scales to compare the old vs the new suspension. Anyone done this weight comparison?

Tunnel mods to install the TKO 600 5 speed. I bought this kit from Keisler (told you I have been collecting parts for a while) just before the folded. Took almost 12 months from the time I ordered and paid for it till it hit my door step. No wonder they went bust.

Hey cudamadd, they must be all on the take. Its crushing waiting 3 months to get a big disappointment like that. Look forward to seeing you around - probably next year the way things are going with the body..

More progress... engine out and sold. Vinyl roof off - revealing rust and pitting.  Trunk metal done.

Other rust sections cut out and replaced. Car had a reasonable hit on the right hand side at some point, but all better now!

Engine bay clean up. Filling as many of the unnecessary holes as possible.  Plugged up the blower hole too as I am going with a Vintage air unit and think the finish will look better with just the hoses through the firewall than the block off plate.

Metric Speed Hut gauges turned up yesterday. They look great in the flesh. Going to replace all interior wood grain with faux carbon.

Got the centre console from Year One. It is really crap quality. The top plate is from PG and neither fit together that great. Its passable but only just. I should have gone with an original one. My one was cracked and broken in the seat belt slots. Any suggestions on where to source a good quality one in good condition?

The bezel piece from Detroit and all their other carbon decals are awesome quality.

Wow!!!   A big project and it'll be worth it in the end!   T/Anks for sharing the pics, etc.

Will your end plans involve any racing (AX/HSAX/road course lapping, etc)?... perhaps more than just "show"?

Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

See  MOPAR ACTION MAGAZINE, AUGUST 2006 ISSUE for featured article and details on my autocross T/A.

Thanks Mitch. There really isn't a category to race in Australia for a car like this. It would need a roll cage to enter anything serious and I (unfortunately) committed to retaining 15" wheel set up, so I have sacrificed brake rotor size and caliper piston count in the process.

There is a category that is the best racing in the country called Touring Car Masters that are late 60's early 70's Australian & American race cars. You should check it out -  http://www.touringcarmasters.com.au/. I may look into some motor Kana type events or track days where street cars without roll cages can go out for timed lap, but not racing per se.

I have enjoyed reading lots about your car & set up in the past and the advice you have given to consider what you want to use the car before you build it. Good advice.
