advice on how to cut open/re-insulate trunk?
« on: June 20, 2016 - 09:52:53 AM »
Hi everyone,

I've got a trunk lid that is in pretty good condition, externally.

When I tilt it, I can hear something (old flaky insulation? mouse crap?) shake from one end to the other.

I'd like to cut it somewhere, empty it, and refill it with (some kind of) insulation.

Any advice on how/where to cut and what to use to reinsulate? Some kind of sound deadener?

This is a spare part, sitting in my garage, so I'm willing to sort of experiment with it. I know new trunk lids aren't too pricey, but I've got a little bit of time, and am not likely to buy a new trunk lid anytime soon.

I've a few cutoff tools, a compressor and can get an opening welded shut again, just wondering how I should plan to start to attack it.

Thanks!

Trunk lids do not have insulation, they have some type of putty between the inner and outer structures. You can drill out the spot welds and remove the two half's  or cut a small hole in the inner structure and get to the piece that fell off and is rattling around, then weld the hole back up.

Something to consider---if you can find the area that has the loose stuff you might try drilling with a small hole saw into the substructure and then use a vacuum or an air compressor to remove the loose stuff. If that works you could drill a matching hole on the opposite side to make it match. No one would ever know the difference. Just make sure you don't punch through the deck lid with the pilot bit. Good luck.
