ball joint locking ring?
« on: June 23, 2016 - 01:44:12 PM »
hello group, trying to get the upper ball joints out of the control arms... got the special socket and with a breaker bar, I get the ball joint to back out until it seems to be hitting a lock ring on the other side. is there such a locking ring on these or do I keep trying to break it loose? this so called ring, which has little half circle patterns around it, seems to go all the way around the ball joint as it also rotates as I try to loosen the ball joint... as usual, all help greatly appreciated!

No lock ring.  The ball joint has "threads" in it.  Those "threads" are just and interference fit with the upper control arm.(the UCA didn't have threads in it originally...the ball joint creates them during installation)  Sometimes the UCA is ruined when the ball joint is removed and the new ball joint doesn't want to tighten up.

I have never seen a locking ring , do you have a picture ? the arm has a lip to add surface area for the threads to grab

Hmmm from your statment and his it sounds like the flange has separated from the uca and created a "ring" that is spinning with his ball joint. Hope that is not the case...

thanks for all the replies... Juergen hit it on the nail! it was the metal ring that was part of the boot... just popped it off and the ball joint came right out! thanks to all for the suggestions!
