Moog offset bushings....
« on: June 27, 2016 - 11:02:15 AM »
..last week I was " overhaulin "  my front end... all balljoints, bushings, and tie rods...idler Arm and Steeringbox..
everything...  I also welded in those LCA reinforment plates..

so when finished I went to a tire shop...to do the alignment.. because of using the normal UCA bushings we only could get 1.5 deg of positive caster..which is not realy much...
So I bought 2 sets of   MOOG OFFSET BUSHINGS   to get more caster...but I am wondering if I only need to change the rear bushing... to get more caster... If I install the front bushing also...  wouldn´t I get issues with the camber ?  I would like to see a camber in the 0.10 to 0.20 negative range...   to save the tire profil...( inwards )

My idea is to install the MOOG Bushings showing outwards with the offset .. to get more caster  and hopefully stayin with a good camber....

Greetings Juergen

Install them both. You will be able to get the needed caster/camber.

I do not believe it will be possible to remove the old bushings and press in the new ones with the UCA still on.  I had to completely remove them from the car to replace the bushings.

It is possible with a length of tube slightly larger  and longer than the bushings, a piece of threaded rod longer than the bushings, a few washers and nuts, a can of WD40,  a big azz wrench, and a big ole can of grunt.

It isn't the easiest way to do it, but if they have been replaced previously, it shouldn't be impossible.

made some pics....

First I made a PULLER / PRESS in Tool... ( HOMEMADE...  used a piece of 2 " exhaust Tube...and a BIG shim )

then I put the car on the lift.... used a jack to "depress the UCA a little...removed the two Bolts that hold the UCA...
AND IMPORTANT ... I tied up the spindle to to shock....  so the spindle doesn´t hang "into " the brakehose...

The rest was easy...also... used the PULLER  to remove the OEM bushing...   pressed in the new one..   aso...

I will be doing this before long also but in the meantime I thought I would pass along a suggestion.

I have replaced many oem bushings in A-arms over the years and some were not that much trouble then some were a PITA. I was told by someone to use an air chisel to remove the old bushing. I have done this several times now and it has always worked great.

Takes only a few seconds to shoot the old bushing and sleeve across the shop floor without doing any damage to the A-Arm hole.

Cheers!

...the only thing is...that you can´t use the air chissle...while the UCA is still bolted to the spindle..
I didn´t remove the spindle..because there is always the posibility to ruin the upperballjoint...
And in my case.. the balljoints are 10 days old...

About the bushings...  with a good puller they come off easy..
