Differences between 1970 and 1971 and up Challenger dash?
« on: June 27, 2016 - 11:03:16 AM »
Besides the "Challenger" name plate being included on the 1970 dash, what are the differences between the 1970 and 1971-4 dashes.

Have a 1970 Challenger which is currently going through a restoration.  The car came with a original 1971 (could be 1972-4 I suppose) ac one speaker dash in excellent shape (not installed) but not sure if it would fit on my 1970 Challenger.  Already have 1970 ac vents, speaker grilles and 1970 LH and RH lower trim bezels - panels and don't really want to replace them.

Thanks

The lower trim bezels will not match up to the dash. Different profile.

Was afraid of that.  Will have to get another dash and sell this 71-74.

Anyone have experience with the reproductions..  specifically the ABS plastic core vs metal core ones?

Thanks

If you go to Tony's Parts website, he sells both the 70 and 71-74 lower dash trim.  You can clearly see the difference in his pictures.  The 70 trim doesn't have the edge detail that the 71-74 trim has.

http://www.tonysparts.com/newproductsE.htm

The 70 dash also has visible stitching around the pad.  The 71-74 pad does not have that visible stitching in the vinyl.

A few years ago when I was getting a new dash for my car I ordered a '70 pad from Dave @ Roseville thinking that I liked
the stitching on a '70 dash pad. That is when I learned the profiles of the lower trim pieces are different. Dave was kind enough to exchange pads for me.

I never took the time to put the two side by side until just now, and yes the contour of the plastic piece is quite different and a 1970 trim piece looks like crap against a 71-71 pad.

Too bad you're not closer I have a MINT original 1970 Challenger A/C single speaker pad I could let go if the price was right. I'm not shipping it so don't even ask. :nono: :smilielol:
