Windage tray for 7 Qt. deep sump pan
« on: June 28, 2016 - 09:51:32 PM »
What is the opinion on the need for a windage tray when running a deep sump pan? Is it as critical since more of the oil is lower? There are two reasons I would like to eliminate it, but only if it's benefit is marginal. I feel that using the tray with double gaskets will be more opportunity for a leak. Secondly, I will need to modify the windage tray to clear the oil pickup. It will be for the most part a street driven car. I already have the windage tray and a pair of Fel-Pro 1384 pan gaskets, but wondering if I should drop the tray.

Thanks
Chris

i use a windage tray with my 7 qt deep sump Moroso pan.
but I also only put in 6 quarts, to also help minimize windage.
If I put in 7 qrts, then I think the windage tray would be quite helpful

it still helps keep the oil off the crank , as oil is fed to the the crank & higher up off the heads

I like them because it prevents oil from splashing into the # 7-8 cylinders on acceleration and 1-2 on high braking. Any wind off of the crankshaft to a minimal is a plus.

Unless you are talking high hp and or high rpm, there is minimal gain on a street motor that spends 99 percent of the time at cruising speed/rpm or less. you won't notice a nickels worth of difference. having said that, I have 1 on mine. to each his own.   :2cents:

above 5000 rpm, probably good for 10+ hp

even though its a deep sump pan, I think it keeps the oil level below
the crank at the stock level.

a scraper also keep more oil in the pan.

early car magazine testing of new cars lowered oil level in pan, to get more horsepower to the rear wheels.

Well, they put them on 340-383-440 and none of them are high hp levels either, even lets the oil cool a little bit to. I'd do it, just because it works, helps, and the ya never know part of the engine future build. Milodon has their own for each pan or sometimes they may not deem neccessary. Your choice, like jhaag said.
