Removing torsion bars
« on: July 07, 2016 - 10:57:28 AM »
Hi guys I am going to be pulling the drivetrain out the bottom so u need to first remove he torsion bars.  My question is when the bars are out does the car completely bottom out or can you still till it around.  I want to remove the bars one lift then roll it into the driveway and pull the drivetrain.  Thanks in advance

Can't be done.  You'll have to take the torsion bars out after you've rolled the car out to the driveway.

...unless you then remove the engine from the K frame and re-install the K and bars. If you need to  move it around, I suppose could skip the bar re-install, but the control arms will be on their bump stops.

You might not even be able to get the torsion bars out with the spindle still connected to the upper control arm.  Disconnect the spindle from the UCA and let the suspension hang all the way down.

easiest way to remove the T bars is to undo the lower pivot & strut rod & pry the lower control arm back with the bar once it is out of the rear socket it comes aprt easily

:iagree: Yep, and don't forget to loosen the T-bar adjuster all the way off beforehand and remove the retaining clips in the T-bar's rear socket as well.

You can use blocks of wood between the lower control arm and the frame to keep the front end raised without torsion bars while moving it outside. :2cents: Been there done that !
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Thanks guys I got it out.  One torsion bar went out no problem the other side I used crycos way.  Then I rolled it out if the garage with blocks between the rails and control arm like Alan said.

Trying to loosen my Tbar & the bolt is just spinning. Is something amiss? Or do I remove the clips at the back first?
Man I miss my dad. Thanks for the help!

Do you have the front end in the air? They are a very fine thread, so it takes a lot of turning to  get them to back out. However, there is always the possibility they stripped out. If that has happened, then you will need new bolts and blocks, so you can just  cut them out.

yes, it's up on stands.
here's where i'm at with the bolt. To my untrained eye, that looks like it's backed out all the way already, but maybe just needs a little assistance where the bracket is?

That's not all the way out, that's all the way IN. The bolt will come out of that plate when it's all the way out. But you at least have to unthread it to the point that the bolt is no longer in contact with that lever arm.
