I've attempted to get to the gauge from the bottom and you can see how this went... I also saw how poorly the Vintage Air lines were hooked up and again how hack some of the install on other parts were done but have realized after spending about 4 hours of my life breaking old plastic etc.

HOW DO I GET TO THE BACK OF THE FUEL GAUGE IN A 71 CUDA?  It sure as heck isn't from the bottom side.  :feedback:

You sound like you are having the same amount of fun I am.

First you have to drop the steering column down a bit to get at some screws and take the bezel off, then unscrew the guages from the frame, hopefully things won't be so tight you cannot pull down on it and get access to the rear.

Here is a URL that might help:

Drop the column, remove the light bar, remove the bezel, remove the gauges. Put a towel or something on the column so you don't scratch it.

So pop the two bolts off the firewall for the steering column and let the wheel drop down - this will give me access to the bottom side of the gauge faces - which will allow access to the screws.  Remove the light bar next and the gauge face tips towards me correct?

the two bolts that attach the column to the dash.

The last part is to lower your column by taking down but not removing the nuts that hold the column to the underside of the dash frame.

The gauges should be able to be pulled out and tilted down giving you access to the backside. The only gotcha is how tight things might be in the back.

Thank you gents!   I went about this the COMPLETELY WRONG WAY and wasted a lot of time... and glue fixing plastic.
