Organosol Black ppg DCC 9355 tips and tricks
« on: July 09, 2016 - 03:45:40 AM »
Here's some tips and tricks that should help just about anyone get perfect results with PPG's DCC 9355 Organosol Black paint.  Everything is spelled out in the video, but below is the paint mix.  TRUST ME, you'll want to watch the videos to get all the tips and tricks to make it easy to get fantastic results.

Cuda Cody's Organosol mix

PPG DCC 9355 = 230.1 grams (about 8 oz)
*DT885 = 146.1 grams (about 6 oz) see video for temp changes
DCX61 = 73.2 grams (about 2 oz)
DX685 = 12.4 grams (about 1/4 oz)
DX1999 = 6.1 grams (about 1/8 oz)

Part 1

Part 2
https://youtu.be/hCqLHEozH1k

Consider doing two spray outs. One with the mix I list in the video and one without any DX685. That way you can see the difference between the two. You might find you like one of those spray outs or you might want to go right in the middle of the two. Do your spray outs on LARGE test panels over the exact sealer / primer you will be using (epoxy is what I suggest). Please remember that different paint guns and application speed / technique can slightly change the end results, but using the Bullet setting with Dust Circles and standing about 42" to 48" back should net you some really nice results. Play around with it until you get the finished look you like.

Good luck.

Wow! I too have been experimenting with 9355 for my AAR project but haven't quite committed or found the right technique for spraying it. When you mentioned spraying from 4 foot away I kind of chuckled at the thought but Cody it looks great. I know you've put some time and money in this because that's not an inexpensive product so my hats off to you and really appreciate you sharing this. Can't wait to try it.

Want to add that I prefer the Organosol Black on the flatter more menacing side.  But the flatter the end results are, can make it harder to keep clean as it will just ever so slightly grab your microfiber towel.  If you prefer you can spray closer (about 42") and take out about 6 grams of flattener to get a slicker finish (still has texture) that will be easier to clean with a microfiber towel.  Play around with it until you get the finished look you like.

Glad to help guys.  Anyone doing test spray outs I would have you consider doing two tests.  One with the mix I list and one without any DX685.  That way you can see the difference between the two.  You might find you like one of those spray outs or you might want to go right in the middle of the two.  Do them over LARGE test panels and over the exact sealer / primer you will be using (epoxy is what I suggest).

Hopefully I get to paint my car next year and will be using this.

I just went through a loooong ordeal trying to get a matte black look on my Barracuda hood....

I ended up using Dead Rat Flat Black....tried spraying it myself using advice from folks and the consensus was "fan pattern, 6" away " etc......even Eastwood said that.

But when I tried to spray it I have nothing but problems with tigerstriping and sandiness....I couldnt bear throwing more and more cash at supplies with no impriovement and gave up.....I ended up having someone with a ton of paint experience shoot it for me and he even said it was very difficult....(but it turned out very nice!!!!!)

I started watching your videos out of curiosity and after the fact. I couldn't stop watching......lots of great info that I bet would transfer to ANY product that is intended to be this sort of matte/textured finish....

The 4' shooting distance and bullet pattern especially..... flies in the face of everyone's advice everywhere and yet it looks AWESOME...and it makes sense the way you explain it.

Basically THANKS for doing such a thorough explanation and posting your solution.,.....you could easily keep it to yourself and make mad $$ spraying stuff for folks but you are sharing the secrets and thats cool!

Now you have me thinking about doing some other projects and trying again....LOL
